Materuni Waterfall Hike, Chagga Village Lunch, Coffee Tour and Kikuletwa Hot Springs
Materuni is a Chagga village 15 km from Moshi Town, and the last settlement before Kilimanjaro National Park. This day trip starts there. An English-speaking guide collects guests from their hotel in Moshi or Arusha in the morning and drives to the village. The first stop is the village office, where everyone registers. From there it is a walk of around 40 minutes to the falls. On the way the guide talks about Chagga culture, village life, and the plants and animals along the trail. The cascade measures more than 80 meters, and the pool at its base is open for a swim, so swimwear belongs in the bag. With luck the summit of Kilimanjaro appears. The walk back to Materuni ends with a traditional Chagga lunch and a taste of local banana beer. The coffee session comes next: guests learn how beans are cultivated, dried and roasted, and help grind them to Chagga songs and dances. The cup they brew is drunk with views of the surrounding rainforest, before the return to Moshi or Arusha in the afternoon. Departure from another place is also possible.
