Materuni Waterfall Hike, Coffee Tasting and Chemka Hot Springs by Tuk Tuk from Moshi
A tuk tuk takes guests from their hotel to Materuni Village, through countryside at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, past rural life and green fields. In the village the guide leads a hike to Materuni Waterfalls along a trail through coffee and banana farms, with chances to learn about local plants and culture. The hike is moderate and suits most fitness levels. The waterfall falls over 80 meters into a clear mountain pool. At the coffee stop, local farmers show the whole process: picking ripe coffee cherries, roasting them over an open fire and grinding them by hand. Guests brew and taste a fresh cup of organic Arabica made the Chagga way. A hot local lunch cooked from fresh local ingredients follows. The last stop is Chemka Hot Springs, also called Kikuletwa, reached by a drive of roughly 2 hours through villages. The warm turquoise pools sit among fig trees and hanging vines in the savannah. The price covers the Materuni and Chemka entrance fees, bottled water, hot traditional food and coffee making. Alcohol and tips are not included. Up to 5 travelers fit on one booking, and guiding is in English.
