Private El Yunque Outskirts Waterfall Hike and Rio Grande Juice Stop, Flexible Start
This private outing stays outside the protected area of El Yunque National Forest. Instead it works the edges of the rainforest, where the swimming spots and waterfalls are off the usual route. A private, air-conditioned vehicle carries the group for the whole day, and the start time is flexible (8 am to noon is the suggested window). The walk is on a local trail and takes about 25 minutes. The guide points out some of the 240 species of native plants and trees on the route, along with animals such as the coqui, reptiles and native birds. The trail ends at forest pools and waterfalls, with time for a swim and for photographs. The trail needs hands at certain points and involves crouching and reaching down, so it is not suited to people with mobility issues, nor generally to the elderly or the very young. Anyone in good physical condition can complete it, whatever their age. On the drive the vehicle climbs to 2,000 feet, with panoramic views over the eastern mountain range of Puerto Rico. The last stop is a fruit and juice shop in the countryside near Rio Grande, where empanadas, frapes and natural juices are on the counter. Bottled water, taxes and fees are included. Food and gratuities are not. The tour lasts about 5 hours, for up to 15 travelers per booking, guided in English or Spanish. Infant seats are available.
