The day lasts 13 hours and is split between water and history. The morning belongs to Erawan Waterfall: three hours on its seven tiers, with swimming in the emerald ponds. After lunch the route turns to Kanchanaburi's historical sites, which include the River Kwai Bridge, the JEATH War Museum and the Death Railway. A 45-minute long-tail boat ride on the River Kwai runs from Wat Tai to the cave temple of Wat Tham Khao Pun. Chong Kai War Cemetery is an optional extra stop for travelers interested in Thai-Burma history, and the guide takes the group there on request. A train may pass while the group is on the bridge. Two vehicles are offered. The private tour uses a standard air-conditioned vehicle. The luxury option is an air-conditioned VIP van with plush seating, free drinking water and a baby car seat, if requested in advance. The price includes hotel pickup and drop-off in downtown Bangkok, a licensed English-speaking guide, a local lunch with drinks, travel accident insurance up to 1,000,000 THB per person, and admission to Erawan Waterfalls, the JEATH War Museum and Wat Tham Khao Pun. The boat ride includes a life jacket. Travelers should have at least a moderate level of fitness, and up to 15 can book together.

Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square is the center of the standard pickup service. Travelers staying in hotels along the BTS Skytrain line are collected.

  2. Erawan Waterfalls

Erawan Waterfall is counted among the most beautiful waterfalls in Thailand. Its seven separate tiers, with emerald-green ponds, run about 1,500 meters through the rainforest of the park. The name comes from Erawan, the three-headed white elephant of Hindu mythology, which the top tier is said to resemble. The admission fee for foreigners is included.

  3. River Khwae Bridge

Films and books made the Bridge on the River Khwae famous with Thais and foreigners alike. The black iron span has steel plates laid over the ties for easier walking, and viewing platforms between the trestles give a view of the river and a place to step aside when a train comes.

  4. JEATH War Museum

JEATH takes its name from the countries involved in building the World War II Death Railway between 1942 and 1945: Japan, England, America, Australia, Thailand and Holland. The museum shows photographs and illustrations of how prisoners of war lived, some donated by survivors. The building itself was converted from a detention hut used at the time.

  5. Wat Chai Chumphon Chana Songkhram

Wat Chai Chumphon Chana Songkhram, known as Wat Tai, is an old temple that matters greatly to the people of Kanchanaburi province. From here a 45-minute Thai-style long-tail boat ride goes to Wat Tham Khao Poon along the River Kwai.

  6. Wat Tham Khao Pun

Wat Tham Khao Pun is a cave temple with a maze of lit passageways. The marked trail is tight in places, and visitors duck under limestone formations to reach the underground shrines.

  7. Chong Kai War Cemetery

An optional stop: ask the guide to go here if Thai-Burma history is of interest. The cemetery lies 2 kilometers south of town on the bank of the Kwai Noi River, on the site of the former Chong Kai prisoner of war camp. Its calm recalls the war and its after-effects.
