Las Tinajas sits on the southeast side of El Yunque, in Ceiba, and this private-group outing is built around two pools. The operator describes the trails as clear and the day as family-friendly. The group meets the guide in Fajardo and follows in its own rental car to the start of the trail. Taxis and rideshare do not go to that location, so a car is required. In some seasons the tour starts earlier than scheduled to reach the river before it gets crowded. The first hike is an off-the-beaten-path walk of 20 to 30 minutes, with exotic plants and birds along the way and the guide explaining the flora and fauna. At the Tinajas pool and waterfalls the water is clear enough to swim in, and there is a swinging rope as well as rocks to jump from, up to 15 feet high. Both are optional. Another 5 to 10 minutes of walking leads to a second pool with a natural waterslide of about 20 feet and an optional 3-foot jump from a rock. The guide suggests finishing in Luquillo with lunch at a beachfront restaurant or a small local place. The tour is about 5.5 hours and takes up to 15 travelers per booking, guided in English or Spanish. A local guide and a life jacket are included. Tips, transportation and parking fees are not. A moderate level of fitness is needed.
