The Zimbabwean side comes first in this private tour, and it shows the most: about 75 percent of the falls can be seen from there, along rainforest paths with Devil's Cataract, the Main Falls viewpoint, Rainbow Falls and the Eastern Cataract. Baboons and vervet monkeys are common on the trails, and hornbills and sunbirds are the birds to look for. Zambia then gives the rest, about 25 percent, at close range: Knife-Edge Bridge, the Boiling Pot at the bottom of the gorge and a view of the Main Falls. Season changes what you see. In high water, February to May, expect heavy spray and roaring water. In low water, September to December, the rock beneath the falls shows and parts of the river can sometimes be crossed on foot. Livingstone Island is an optional extra at additional cost. The tour lasts just over four hours and goes by air-conditioned vehicle, with a bottle of water for each guest and a driver from pickup to drop-off. Guiding is available in German, English, Italian, French and Spanish. Government park fees on the Zimbabwean side are not included, and the Zambian fee is paid at the entrance. A KAZA or double-entry visa should be obtained at the airport or border: a single-entry visa means buying another to re-enter Zimbabwe after the tour. Up to 15 travelers, moderate fitness, wheelchair accessible.

  1. Victoria Falls

The Zimbabwean side gives the widest views of Victoria Falls, since about 75 percent of the falls can be seen from here. A network of rainforest paths leads to several viewpoints, each with its own angle. Devil's Cataract is the westernmost point, where the water rushes into a deep chasm. The Main Falls viewpoint faces the largest curtain of water, with thunder and constant mist. Rainbow Falls is the highest drop and often has rainbows in the spray. The Eastern Cataract looks down the gorge to the Zambezi. The rainforest itself survives on the spray, with exotic trees, colorful birds and monkeys. Baboons and vervet monkeys are common along the trails, as are hornbills and sunbirds.

  2. Victoria Falls

The Zambian side is closer and more intimate. It shows about 25 percent of the falls but puts you where the power of the Zambezi can be felt. Knife-Edge Bridge is among the most dramatic viewpoints, a walk through mist and rainbows with the falls thundering a few meters away. The Boiling Pot lies at the bottom of the gorge, where the river swirls into a huge whirlpool. The Main Falls view is a front-row seat to one of the strongest sections of the waterfall. In high water (February to May) expect spray and a roar; in low water (September to December) the rock formations show and sometimes parts of the river can be crossed on foot. Livingstone Island is an optional extra at additional cost. The rainforest fed by the spray holds vervet monkeys, baboons and colorful birds.
