Three early pickup points start this Road to Hana day by Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van: Cannery Mall in Lahaina at 6:00am, the Maalaea Park n' ride at 6:30am and the Kahului Park n' ride at 6:40am. The van is a luxury, air-conditioned model that carries a maximum of 14 people. The chauffeur is a professional who narrates the drive with a deep knowledge of Hawaiian culture and history. Along the road come waterfalls to swim in, several sand beaches and the black sand beach at Wai'anapanapa State Park, called the most famous on the island. The driver chooses the lunch spot, and if time allows the van stops at fruit stands for fresh produce. Food, beverages and pickups at most hotels and resorts are included. The drive crosses 56 one-lane bridges, and the stories on the way take in the historic moments and legendary tales of the islands. The route runs through rainforest and past waterfalls, plunging pools and sea views. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

1221 HI-30, Lahaina

1221 HI-30, Lahaina, HI 96761, USA

Pickup at 6:00am at Cannery Mall Lahaina, 1221 Honoapiilani Hwy, Lahaina, HI 96761, with free parking. Wait outside the main entrance next to the Starbucks.

  1. Hana Highway - Road to Hana

The Hana Highway runs 64.4 miles (103.6 km) and is described as the longest coastal scenic route in the world. East of Kalepa Bridge it continues to Kipahulu as Hawaii Route 31, the Piilani Highway. This tour crosses 59 single-lane bridges and over 640 turns through tropical rainforest. Most of the bridges are concrete and steel and date from 1910.

  2. Paia

Four miles from Kahului lies Paia, a historic town on Maui's north coast. It is split into Lower Paia and Paia and was once a busy plantation town in the years of the sugar cane industry. Today it has colorful rustic storefronts with art galleries, boutiques and restaurants.

  3. Ho'okipa Beach Park

Ho'okipa is called the windsurfing capital of the world, and windsurfers, kite boarders and surfers can be watched here. It is also Maui's capital for threatened Hawaiian green sea turtles, with 200-pound turtles feeding along the shore and resting on the beach all day.

  4. Twin Falls Maui

The first easily reached string of waterfalls and pools on the Road to Hana.

  5. Haipua'ena Falls

A small waterfall and pool. The trail is unsigned and the short hike crosses a muddy path, so the pool sees far fewer visitors than the well signed falls on this road.

  6. Ke‘anae Point

Small Hawaiian villages try to live as the Hawaiians of old did, hunting pigs and growing taro, breadfruit and bananas. The Half Way to Hana snack stand is here, with shave ice, fresh coconut, cold drinks and the Original Fresh Baked Banana Bread. The Keanae overlook and peninsula look over one of the largest taro farms in Hawaii.

  7. In 1983

Aunty Sandy Hueu began baking her banana bread in Ke'anae in 1983. Her daughter Tammy joined in 2003 to make it a family owned food stand on the peninsula, and it has become a regular stop for hot, fresh baked banana bread.

  8. Ching's Pond

A very photogenic spot where people get photographed doing something life threatening.

  9. Upper Waikani Falls

Upper Waikani Falls is known as Three Bears for its three parallel falls of different lengths. The smallest, on the right, is the baby bear.

  10. Wailua Falls

A picturesque and very easily reached waterfall seen from the Hana Highway. It can be seen without leaving the car.

  11. Hana Lava Tubes

Lava tubes form when a big flow cools on the surface into an insulating shell over the lava still running below. Such tubes acted as veins of the volcano and carried lava for many miles before it reached the ocean. Over time most collapse, so few large ones remain. Ka'eleku Cave is the largest known accessible lava tube on Maui.

  12. Hana Bay

Hana Beach Park sits inside Hana Bay and has a long black sand beach. It is the safest swimming beach on the East Maui coast: a coral reef protects the bay, and its curved shape shelters it from big swells.

  13. Wai'anapanapa State Park

Maui's famous black sand beach, with cobalt blue water against black sand and black lava rock from a flow only 10,000 years ago. Visitors can walk the edge of the bay or sit under a shade tree, and an hour here passes easily. The park is among the best sites on the Road to Hana, with almost 360-degree views: green jungle hills and valleys give way to a rugged black basalt coastline, where white waves break into spray against jagged cliffs.

  14. Pua'a Ka'a State Park

The waterfall here is fairly easy to reach. Some visitors take a dip in the chilly water on a hot day. Wear a swimsuit under clothes, bring a change of clothes and pack towels.

  15. Upper Waikani Falls

Just beyond Mile Marker 19 on the mauka (mountain) side of the Hana Highway, Upper Waikani Falls is called Three Bears for its three parallel falls of different lengths. The smallest, on the right, is the baby bear.

  16. Wailua Valley State Wayside Park

Wailua Valley is an ahupua'a just past the Keanae peninsula on the road to Hana. Small but rich in Hawaiian culture, it still has rare, culturally significant fish and plants and many ancient taro (kalo) patches, some still worked. In Hawaiian legend taro is the older brother of all Hawaiians, and cultivating the land, Mahi'ai'ana, remains a core principle for the people of Wailuanui.

  17. The beautiful view from this lookout point really gives you…

The lookout gives a sense of how ancient Hawaii must have looked and felt, a glimpse of untouched Maui.

  18. Honomanu

A pullout just past Kaumahina State Wayside Park with a good view of Honomanu Bay and another look at the Ke'anae Peninsula. The views from Kaumahina Wayside Park are better, so stopping there is preferred.

  19. Kaumahina State Wayside Park

Kaumahina State Wayside Park is in Maui County, 28.3 miles east of Kahului and 22.4 miles west of Hana on the Hana Highway. The park covers 7.8 acres of forest and exotic plants.

  20. The unique rainbow tree reveals bright shades of green

The rainbow eucalyptus shows bands of green, blue, purple, orange and maroon as patches of bark shed through the year. The trees can reach 200 feet.
