Five towns and one waterfall fit into this full-day tour through Herzegovina, which starts at Zelenih beretki 30 in Sarajevo. Konjic comes first, a wooded riverside town about 60 kilometers southwest of Sarajevo, with the best preserved Ottoman bridge in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its six-arch Old Bridge was built in 1682 to 1683, destroyed by the retreating German army in March 1945 and rebuilt in its original state between 2003 and 2009. It is now a National Monument. Jablanica is next, with its World War II history and the destroyed bridge. Mostar is the highlight: a UNESCO World Heritage site with the Old Bridge and the Old Bazaar, where daring locals dive into the Neretva. Blagaj follows, with its Dervish house and the Buna spring, then Počitelj, a medieval town of ancient walls and Ottoman architecture. The Kravice waterfalls come last, with turquoise cascades among green growth, a place to rest and take photos. Along the way the route follows the Neretva, which is 230 km long and has cut a canyon so narrow that the sky looks like a tiny blue ring.

  1. Zelenih beretki 30, Sarajevo

    Zelenih beretki 30, Sarajevo.

  2. Konjic

Konjic lies in northern Herzegovina, about 60 kilometers (37 mi) southwest of Sarajevo, in a mountainous, heavily wooded area 268 m (879 ft) above sea level. Its Stara Ćuprija (Old Bridge) was built in 1682 to 1683 by Ali-aga Hasečić, as a stone plaque at the center of the bridge shows. Six slightly pointed stone arches carry it, and it is the best preserved Ottoman bridge in the country. German troops destroyed the arches as they retreated in March 1945. The bridge was rebuilt in its original state between 2003 and 2009 and is a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

  3. Kravice Falls

The Kravice Waterfalls are the final highlight: turquoise water cascades down among green growth, a spot for resting and taking photos.

  4. Pocitelj

Počitelj is a medieval town with cobbled streets, centuries-old stone fortifications and well-preserved Ottoman architecture, set in natural surroundings.

  5. River Buna Spring

Vrelo Bune is a natural and architectural ensemble at the spring of the Buna River near Blagaj, a village-town. It belongs to the wider Townscape ensemble of the town of Blagaj, part of the historical and natural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

  6. Blagaj

Blagaj Tekija is a Dervish monastery outside Mostar, nearly 600 years old, at the foot of a cliff beside the Buna spring. The group of buildings was first founded at the height of the Ottoman empire, and the passage of time and rockslides called for extensive repairs and rebuilding. Thanks largely to a Turkish travel agency, the tekke now looks mostly as it did in the past.

  7. Mostar

Mostar lies across a deep valley of the Neretva and grew in the 15th and 16th centuries as an Ottoman frontier town, then under Austro-Hungarian rule in the 19th and 20th centuries. It takes its name from the Old Bridge, Stari Most, and is known for its old Turkish houses. In the 1990s conflict most of the historic town and the bridge, designed by the architect Sinan, were destroyed. The bridge has been rebuilt, and many Old Town buildings were restored or rebuilt with an international scientific committee set up by UNESCO.

  8. Neretva River

Legend says the old Illyrians saw the emerald-green river and shouted Nera Etwa, meaning divinity that flows. The Neretva runs 230 km from its source to the Adriatic Sea and has cut a narrow canyon from which the sky looks like a tiny blue ring.
