Sarajevo to Mostar Day Tour via Konjic, Buna Canals, Kravica and Blagaj (10/10)

This day tour from Sarajevo works its way south through Herzegovina and ends in the UNESCO-listed town of Mostar. The stops are Konjic, the Buna canals, the Kravica waterfall, Počitelj and Blagaj, with Jablanica also part of the route, and the guide fills the drives with stories about history and local life. The day is set up for comfort, so most of it goes to seeing places rather than sorting out logistics. Konjic has an Ottoman stone bridge from 1682. At the Buna canals the Buna and Neretva rivers run side by side before part of the Buna crosses travertine barriers and joins the Neretva. Kravica is a waterfall 28 meters high in a natural amphitheater 120 meters wide, a favorite picnic and swimming spot in summer. Počitelj goes back to the late 14th century, and Blagaj has its Dervish monastery of nearly 600 years at the base of a cliff by the Buna spring. In Mostar the group sees the Old Bridge, the Crooked Bridge, the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque and the Old Bazaar, with 30 minutes of shopping time before the drive back to Sarajevo.

  1. Kulovića 4, Sarajevo

  2. Konjic Bridge

The Old Stone Bridge in Konjic dates from the Ottoman period and joined the banks of the Neretva from 1682 until 3 March 1945, when retreating German troops destroyed it. It was a rare example of classical Turkish bridge building.

  3. Bunski Kanal Most

The Buna canals are among the most beautiful places in Bosnia and Herzegovina, though not yet fully organized for tourism. Here the Buna, a left tributary, meets the Neretva. The two rivers first run side by side, and only part of the Buna crosses travertine barriers, forming small waterfalls, before it joins the Neretva and continues toward the Adriatic Sea.

  4. Kravice Falls

Kravica is a favorite picnic area and summer swimming spot. The Trebižat River forms a waterfall 28 meters high and a natural amphitheater 120 meters wide, 3 kilometers downstream from the village of Hrašljani, between Studenci and Zvirici. In summer, visitors can swim and take part in activities on the river.

  5. The historic urban site of Pocitelj

This UNESCO-listed settlement has been reconstructed recently, which has returned it to its original form. It was first mentioned in 1444, though some documents suggest it was built in the late 14th century on the order of the Bosnian king Tvrtko.

  6. River Buna Spring

Few rivers anywhere are shorter than the nine-kilometer Buna, and few are as beautiful or as popular.

  7. Blagaj tekija

Blagaj Tekija is a Dervish monastery outside Mostar, nearly 600 years old, at the base of a cliff beside the source of the Buna. It was founded at the height of the Ottoman empire. Time and rockslides required extensive repairs, and thanks largely to a Turkish travel agency the tekke now looks much as it did in the past.

    Extra fee

  8. Mostar Old Bridge

Mostar spans a deep valley of the Neretva and developed in the 15th and 16th centuries as an Ottoman frontier town, then under Austro-Hungarian rule in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is named after its Old Bridge, Stari Most, designed by the architect Sinan. Most of the historic town and the bridge were destroyed in the 1990s conflict. The bridge was rebuilt, and many Old Town buildings were restored or rebuilt with the help of an international scientific committee set up by UNESCO. The area combines pre-Ottoman, eastern Ottoman, Mediterranean and western European architecture and is regarded as a symbol of reconciliation and of coexistence among cultural, ethnic and religious communities.

  9. Crooked Bridge (Kriva Cuprija)

The Crooked Bridge is a small one-arch stone bridge on the Radobolja River, about 150 meters upstream from where it meets the Neretva. A trust fund document from 1558 by Ćejvan mentions it, which shows it was built shortly before that date and so predates the Old Bridge of 1566. According to tradition, the Old Bridge was modeled on it.

  10. Koski-Mehmed Pasha Mosque

Entered through a gated courtyard, this 1618 mosque was substantially rebuilt after the war. The dome carries painted botanical motifs and colored-glass windows, and the cramped minaret can be climbed for sweeping views of the town.

  11. Bazar Kujundziluk

Free time for shopping on the Old Bazaar street, one of the best-known streets in the country. The group spends 30 minutes here, and the rest of the time goes to the drive back to Sarajevo.

  12. Kulovića 4, Sarajevo
