South Coast Day Tour with Volcano Commentary, Skógafoss and Reynisfjara Black Beach
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
ReykjavikSouth Iceland is the flattest part of the country, which is why farms cover so much of it. Around those fields the horizon is crowded: mountains, glaciers, volcanoes, two big waterfalls and the open sea. This 10-hour bus tour from Reykjavik drives through all of it, with a guide who points out the volcanoes along the way, among them Hekla, Eyjafjallajökull and Katla. Hekla is one of Iceland's most active, and for centuries people believed it was the entrance to hell. Eyjafjallajökull stopped air traffic across Europe in 2010. Skógafoss is a picturesque 60-meter fall, striking enough to turn up often in movies and commercials. You can get close enough to feel the spray on your face, or climb the stairway for a view from the top. At Reynisfjara, the black sand and pebble beach is backed by basalt columns and caves, with Atlantic waves hitting the shore and the Reynisdrangar pillars standing offshore. Lunch in Vík is at your own expense. The other stops are a short halt at Sólheimajökull, an outlet of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, and Seljalandsfoss, where you can walk behind the falls when the weather allows. Hotel pickup and drop-off is included if you select it, along with a professional guide, an air-conditioned vehicle and Wi-Fi on board. Food and drinks are not included. Infant seats are available, children must be accompanied by an adult, and bookings take up to 30 travelers. Guiding is in English.
