Two-Day Santo Domingo River Canyon Hike to the Valley of Waterfalls
The Santo Domingo River canyon lies close to Medellín, with steep mountains covered in tropical forest and tall waterfalls dropping into the river. It is home to one of the last free rivers in Antioquia, with clear water and one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, full of birds, colourful butterflies and plants. This is a two-day hike. Most of the route follows old forest trails along the river, through canyons with rock walls rising on both sides, and there are swims in the river. On the first afternoon the group reaches a campesino inn beside the river for local food, and at night a bonfire brings the hikers together. A viewpoint over the Cocorná river valley shows two large waterfalls. At dawn on the second day the hike continues to the waterfalls of the Valley of Waterfalls, with a panoramic view from their base. A local campesino community welcomes visitors and serves local dishes. The operator involves these communities in its ecotourism activities so they benefit economically and stay on their land while nature is conserved.
