This overland route goes from Victoria Falls through northern Botswana to the Okavango Delta. It opens with a transfer to Kasane, border crossing included, which takes about an hour and a half. The afternoon is a three-hour boat cruise on the Chobe River, leaving the lodge at 14:30 in an open-sided 4x4. Day three has two game drives, from 06:00 to about 09:00 with tea and coffee in the bush and a full breakfast at 09:30, and again from 15:00 to 18:00. Day four is a 300 km drive of about four hours to Makgadikgadi Pan, one of the largest salt flats in the world. Day five continues four hours to Maun through Makgadikgadi National Park, with an optional flight over the Okavango Delta that evening. Days six and seven are a night in the delta: a 4x4 to the river, a mokoro canoe ride with local polers to an island camp, a two-hour walk and a night in movable tents with bush ablutions. The tour ends in Maun after lunch on the last day.

  1. Chobe National Park

The trip begins with a transfer from your hotel in Victoria Falls to Kasane in Botswana, border crossing included, about an hour and a half. Kasane is the gateway town to Chobe National Park in northern Botswana, known for big herds of elephants and Cape buffalo along the Chobe Riverfront in the dry months. Lions, antelopes and hippos live around the Linyanti Marsh, and the Savuti Marsh draws many birds and migrating zebras.

  2. Chobe National Park

The afternoon is a boat cruise on the Chobe River. A 4x4 open-sided vehicle leaves the lodge at 14:30 for the boat at 15:00, and animals come to the river to drink, so the banks are busy. The cruise lasts three hours upstream and the boat docks just before dusk, around 18:00.

  3. Chobe National Park

Two game drives today. The morning drive starts around 06:00 and runs to about 09:00, with tea and coffee in the bush and a full breakfast around 09:30. Early morning and late afternoon are when the bush is most active: nocturnal animals head for cover, leopards finish their rounds, hyena cubs play outside the den and lions finish a night kill. The afternoon safari runs from 15:00 to 18:00.

  4. Makgadikgadi Salt Pan

After breakfast, at about 08:00, a 300 km drive of roughly four hours leads to the Makgadikgadi Pan, so keep the camera handy because the route has animals. The pan sits in the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana and is one of the largest salt flats in the world. Its name means vast, lifeless land. It is what remains of Lake Makgadikgadi, once larger than Switzerland, which dried up tens of thousands of years ago, and even in high season few people come.

  5. Okavango Delta

After an 8 am breakfast, a four-hour drive leads to Maun through Makgadikgadi National Park, with more game on the way. You reach Maun in time for lunch and the hotel in the afternoon, leaving time for an optional flight over the Okavango Delta at extra cost, with a minimum of five people.

  6. Okavango Delta

After an early breakfast you leave for a two-day, one-night safari in the Okavango Delta. A 4x4 open-sided vehicle takes you to the river, where local polers meet the group and take you by mokoro (dugout canoe) through quiet channels, past hippos and other animals, to the island camp. After setting up camp you relax by the water and watch birds. At 16:00 a two-hour walk with a local guide comes before dinner and the night in movable tents with a bush ablution.

  7. Maun

Start with coffee and rusks and a morning walk, then a full breakfast. After packing up the tents, another 1.5 hours by mokoro brings you to the 4x4 for the ride back to Maun. The safari wraps up after lunch, and the tour ends on arrival in Maun.
