2-Day South Coast Tour with Katla or Crystal Ice Cave, Skaftafell and Jokulsarlon (12/12)

This two-day guided tour covers the main stops of Iceland's South Coast and adds a natural ice cave. In summer the cave is Katla, inside the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. In winter it is the Crystal Ice Cave in Vatnajökull National Park. The itinerary also takes in the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara and Vík, the Sólheimajökull glacier, Skaftafell, the Jökulsárlón lagoon and Diamond Beach. The tour starts with a pickup in Reykjavik, and the night is spent in accommodation reached by driving through Vík. In the winter months, the night far from the city gives a chance to spot the northern lights. The route passes Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano whose 2010 eruption disrupted air travel across Europe, and Skógafoss, 25 meters wide with a 60-meter drop, which has a staircase to the top. The tour returns to Reykjavik at around 9 pm on the second day.

  1. Arctic Adventures

The tour starts with a pickup in Reykjavik.

  2. Seljalandsfoss waterfall

Seljalandsfoss drops about 60 meters in South Iceland. Visitors can walk behind it into a small cave for an all-around view. The water comes from the Eyjafjallajökull glacier volcano.

  3. Skogafoss

Skógafoss is 25 meters wide with a 60-meter drop, on the Skógá River. A staircase leads to the top for a look down at the thundering water. Legend says the first Viking settler of the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure in a cave behind it.

  4. Reynisfjara Beach

Reynisfjara is a famous black sand beach, known for its basalt columns, the Reynisdrangar sea stacks and powerful Atlantic waves.

  5. Wool Gallery Vik i Myrdal

The route passes through the small town of Vík on the way to the accommodation.

  6. Skaftafell National Park

Skaftafell is a nature reserve inside Vatnajökull National Park in southeast Iceland, with glaciers such as Skaftafellsjökull and Svínafellsjökull, waterfalls like Svartifoss and hiking trails. It was once a national park of its own.

  7. Volcano Eyjafjallajokull

Eyjafjallajökull is a stratovolcano under an ice cap, best known for its 2010 eruption, whose ash cloud disrupted air travel across Europe.

  8. Solheimajokull Glacier

Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap in Southern Iceland. It is easy to reach and popular for guided glacier hikes and ice climbing, and its ice front is receding fast.

  9. Jokulsarlon

Jökulsárlón is a glacial lagoon in southeast Iceland where icebergs break off from Breiðamerkurjökull and old ice drifts toward the sea.

  10. Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach is a black sand beach on the south coast where icebergs from the nearby Jökulsárlón lagoon wash ashore.

  11. Myrdalsjokull Glacier

In summer, guided tours can enter the Katla Ice Cave inside the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, to see its blue ice formations and learn about the Katla volcano under the ice cap.

  12. Vatnajokull National Park

In winter, visitors can explore the Crystal Ice Cave in Vatnajökull National Park, a seasonal cave with blue ice formed by glacial meltwater.

  13. Reykjavik

The tour returns to Reykjavik at around 9 pm.

  • We use a couple of different ice caves for our 2 day South Coast tour. Ice caves are ever-changing and unpredictable natural phenomena. We usually visit the Crystal Cave at Breiðmerkurjökull during this tour but when the Crystal Cave is inaccessible we will most likely visit Katla Ice Cave. Which ice cave is chosen will however always depend upon the conditions and safety considerations on the day, sometimes a different ice cave will be visited. If conditions do not allow us to visit an ice cave a glacier hike will be offered as an alternative.
  • This tour has the flexibility to make the most of the seasonal changes such as changes in weather and conditions. During the summer Iceland is characterized by energizing bright nights and midnight sun. Between August and May, if the forecast is suitable, you might even be able to spot the magical show put on by the Northern Lights. It is important to note that a guided Northern Lights hunt is however not included in the tour. Other wonderful and interesting possibilities can also come up during your south coast tour with us as Iceland is full of surprises.
