2-Day South Coast Tour with Skaftafell Glacier Hike, Blue Ice Cave and Jokulsarlon
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
ReykjavikThis two-day tour from Reykjavik pairs a guided glacier hike with a visit to a natural blue ice cave, both at Skaftafell, and ends at Jökulsárlón. The ice cave is open from October to March. Day one starts with pickup at the hotel or the nearest bus stop in Reykjavik, then Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. At Skaftafell, highly trained glacier guides fit the group with safety equipment for a hike of at least two hours on an outlet glacier of one of the country's largest glaciers, and the guide talks about ice caves along the way. The night is spent at a remote countryside hotel, which gives a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Sightings are a natural, seasonal event and not a guaranteed guided activity within the package. Day two reaches Jökulsárlón, a lagoon 200 m deep fed by Breiðamerkurjökull, with a walk along its shore, and Fellsfjara, the beach of ice chunks across the road. The way back stops at Reynisfjara, a black sand beach with basalt columns, where puffins and other birds nest from June to August.

The tour starts with pickup in Reykjavik, either at the hotel or at the nearest bus stop.
-
Seljalandsfoss waterfall
The first stop in the south is Seljalandsfoss. With a raincoat, the short walk behind the falls is possible.
-
Skogafoss
At Skógafoss the river Skógá drops 60 meters down a cliff in a small gorge on its way to the Atlantic. A staircase beside the gorge leads up to the shelf above the fall.
-
Skaftafell National Park
A hike on an outlet glacier of one of the country's largest glaciers. After meeting the highly trained glacier guides and putting on safety equipment, the group walks on the ice for at least two hours. The blue ice cave in Skaftafell follows, and the guide shares his expertise on ice caves.
-
Glacier Lagoon
Day two begins at Jökulsárlón, a lagoon 200 m deep fed by Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet of Europe's largest glacier. Icebergs break off all year round, so the lagoon is usually full of ice floating south. A walk along the shore gives wide views.
-
Fellsfjara
Across the road, icebergs from the lagoon float out into the Atlantic and are quickly thrown back to shore by tide and wind. The black sand beach is covered in smaller pieces of ice in all shapes and sizes, sparkling like diamonds in daylight.
-
Reynisfjara Beach
Reynisfjara is a black sand beach where Atlantic waves crash into basalt columns in the cliffs. Rock pillars in the water and the cliffs of Dýrhólaey show in the distance. Puffins and dozens of other species nest on the cliffs from June to August.
