Bodaboda Motorbike Ride to Materuni Waterfall, Coffee and Village Tour
Instead of a car, this six-hour trip from Moshi climbs to Materuni village by bodaboda, the local motorbike, with the return ride on the same bikes. A professional village guide leads a walk between coffee and banana trees to Materuni Waterfall, 90 m high, and explains the plants and animals on Kilimanjaro's slopes, the history of the Chagga community and the view of the mountain. A coffee tour at local farms follows. The day closes with a meal prepared by local women, and walking, learning, eating and dancing with village people are all part of it. The route can include the local primary schools and the church, and guests who want to support the community can ask the guide how. Included are the guide, bodaboda transport both ways, bottled water, lunch, a tasting of local banana beer, all fees and taxes, and coffee or tea. Tips are not. Good hiking shoes and a rain jacket are needed. Guiding is in English, French and Spanish, and up to 15 travellers can book together. Moderate fitness is required, and the day is not recommended for travellers with spinal injuries or pregnancy.
