Half-Day Private Materuni Waterfalls and Chagga Coffee Tour with Local Guide (12/12)

A locally owned operator runs this four-hour private half-day, and each group walks with a local guide. The route from Materuni village to the waterfall takes 40 to 50 minutes and doubles as a lesson in Chagga life: what the villagers farm and why, how they live, and what most of them do for fun. The fall is between 70 and 80 m high. Guests can swim at its foot, though the water is sometimes a little too cold. From above there are views over Moshi, and on a day without cloud, Kilimanjaro itself. After the falls the group walks back to the village and visits one of the local farms for the coffee tour. The guide covers the history of coffee, and guests learn to make their own cup the traditional way. Private transportation, all fees and taxes, a local lunch and a bottle of water are included. Guiding is in English and French, and up to 15 travellers can book together. The day suits all fitness levels, service animals are allowed and infants sit on an adult's lap, but it is not recommended for travellers with spinal injuries. Public transport options are available nearby.

  1. Materuni Waterfalls

The waterfall is one of the tallest in the Kilimanjaro region, reached by a 40 to 50 minute walk from Materuni village past farms, with the guide explaining what the villagers grow and why. The fall is 70 to 80 m high, and guests can swim, though the water can be quite cold. The walk offers views over Moshi from above and, with luck, Kilimanjaro ahead. The group then walks back to the village and visits a local farm for a coffee tour, from the history of coffee to making a cup the traditional way.
