Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Tours from Moshi

20 tours, one by one: from under 30 to more than 120 EUR, typically 60 to 120 EUR for around 5.5 hours, a forest walk to the fall and a coffee lesson in a Chagga village.

The cheapest of the 20 Materuni coffee-farm tours costs under 30 EUR and the dearest more than 120 EUR, a wide spread for what is mostly the same village, the same fall and the same coffee. The typical price is 60 to 120 EUR for about 5.5 hours. Here the 20 listings are taken one at a time: what each day includes, why the price moves, which carry hours that cannot be right, and who runs the busiest ones. It is the short format of the two Materuni days. The place, the fees and the season are on the Materuni page, and the long day with the hot springs is on its own page.

Some context for the numbers: they were taken on 22 October 2026. The busiest operator, Materuni Village Experience, holds 32% of the 887 reviews through two listings, both of about 6 hours and priced at roughly 30 to 120 EUR. A 4.95 rating from 19 operators is a good sign, but it rests mostly on a few of them. Prices are per person, private tours included: none of the 15 private tours quotes one price for the whole group, so the numbers compare directly.

Materuni waterfall and coffee tours: what the day is

The coffee-farm format is a village day. You are collected in Moshi or Arusha and taken to Materuni, a Chagga village on the Kilimanjaro slopes, where a local guide leads the hike of 40 to 45 minutes up to the fall, through coffee and banana plots. The listings give the height as 80 or 90 m and call the swim in the pool optional. Back in the village there is a coffee session and a lunch. The itineraries list one stop at the median: the village, with the fall as the walk inside it.

The coffee tour is a farm demonstration by the people who grow the coffee, not a visit to an estate.
Cupped hands full of red, green and dark coffee cherries, East Africa

The coffee

How the coffee is made in the village

Listings walk through the same steps. You learn how the Arabica is grown and harvested, you pound the dried beans to take off their shells, you roast them, you grind them with the villagers, and you drink the cup you made. Traditional songs and dances often accompany the grinding. Lunch is prepared by local cooks, and banana beer is offered, though one listing says it is not in the price.

The photo shows ripe and unripe coffee cherries in a pair of hands, which is the stage the day starts from. Operators disagree on the order of the day: some walk to the fall first and finish with coffee, others begin with the farm and hike afterward, so ask when the lunch is.

How long a Materuni coffee tour takes

The 20 coffee-farm listings grouped by the length the provider states; prices are approximate bands
Stated length Listings Price bands
3 to 4 hours7under 30 to 120 EUR
5 to 6 hours7under 30 to 250 EUR
7 to 9 hours360 to 120 EUR
12 hours1120 to 250 EUR
Length wrong in the listing230 to 120 EUR

The two listings with wrong hours are worth naming. One shows 30.7 hours, but its description is a single day from a Moshi hotel with a packed lunch at the fall. The other shows 6 minutes, and its description is about visiting and donating to children in the village rather than an itinerary. Neither length is real, and we would ask the operator for the true length before booking either. The 12-hour listing in the 120 to 250 EUR band describes a day before or after a safari or a climb and mentions a drop-off at Kilimanjaro airport, which makes it a transfer with a waterfall attached.

What moves the price of a Materuni coffee tour

Chart of the prices of the 20 Materuni Waterfall & Coffee Tours listings on waterfalls.travel, median 63.4 EUR

The chart: 19 listings by length and price

The blue circles are the five listings not marked private, orange diamonds the 14 private ones. Look at the blue ones: three of them, at roughly 60 to 250 EUR, are among the four dearest listings, so a group departure here is not the cheap option. At 4 hours prices run from under 30 to 120 EUR, and at 6 hours from 30 to 250 EUR, so length explains less than the operator does. The dashed line is the median, in the 60 to 120 EUR band.

Two things do show in the data. The cheapest listings move you by Tuk Tuk from Moshi, under 30 EUR for a half day, or by bodaboda, a motorbike taxi, 30 to 60 EUR for the experience of that name. And three listings do not include lunch, at 60 to 250 EUR. A listing that adds a Moshi town tour costs 60 to 120 EUR for 4 hours. So the first question is what moves you and what you eat, and only then what you pay. Group sizes run from a few travelers to 30 per booking, so check the listing, and the price is per person on the private departures too, so two numbers compare directly.

Who runs these tours

Nineteen operators run the 20 listings, which is a fragmented market. Materuni Village Experience leads with 257 reviews on its main day and 23 on its motorbike day, 32% of the total. Africa Pathways Expeditions has 115 reviews at 60 to 120 EUR for 9 hours and a 4.7 rating, the lowest in the group. KLM Safaris has 94 reviews at 30 to 60 EUR for 3 hours, from Moshi. Boni has 92 reviews under 30 EUR for 5 hours, and Nature Whisper Expedition 34 under 30 EUR for 4. The two days under 30 EUR are the cheapest credible ones, and they are also short. Most others have fewer than 25 reviews, so read recent comments, not just the average.

The walk, the shoes and who should come

The trail is a farm path, muddy and slippery in the wet. Listings ask for good hiking shoes and, if you want to swim, swimwear. Their own descriptions of fitness differ: several say the day suits all fitness levels, others ask for a moderate level, and several are not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, for pregnant travelers or for those with poor cardiovascular health. We found no minimum age in any of the listings we opened, so ask before you bring children.

Where people go wrong with the coffee day

The first is picking the cheapest listing without asking about transport and lunch. The second is trusting a very long or very short duration: the 6-minute and 30.7-hour figures are errors, and the true length of those days is unconfirmed. The third is assuming a coffee tour means an estate. It is a village farm, and that is the point. The fourth is booking this format when you wanted warm water at the end of the day: that is the hot springs format, typically 60 to 120 EUR, and it needs a full day.

Questions about the Materuni waterfall and coffee tour

What happens on a Materuni coffee tour?

You see how coffee is grown, dried, pounded, roasted and ground in a Chagga village farm, often with songs and dances, and you drink the cup you made. A walk of about 40 minutes to the Materuni fall and a lunch are part of most days, 85% of listings include lunch.

Is the Materuni tour good for kids?

The listings do not set a minimum age that we could find. Some say the day suits all fitness levels, others ask for a moderate level, and the trail is slippery. Ask the operator about the pace and the walk before bringing small children.

How much does a Materuni waterfall and coffee tour cost?

The typical price is 60 to 120 EUR for 20 listings, with the middle half roughly 30 to 120 EUR. The cheapest credible days are under 30 EUR for 4 to 5 hours and the dearest is above 120 EUR for 12, a transfer with a waterfall in it.

How long does the Materuni coffee tour take?

The median is 5.5 hours. Seven listings run 3 to 4 hours and seven 5 to 6. Two listings show lengths of 6 minutes and 30.7 hours, which are errors, so confirm the hours with the operator.

Where do I meet the guide?

Most listings include pickup in Moshi or Arusha. One says to meet at the Materuni Village Office at an agreed time. Confirm the pickup hour and place with the operator the day before.

Want the whole day with the hot springs?

The hot springs page reads the 20 longer Materuni tours, typically 60 to 120 EUR for 9 hours, with the drive south.
