Icefields Parkway Tour: Peyto Lake, Bow Lake, Athabasca and Sunwapta Falls
The route follows the Icefields Parkway, and the main stop depends on the calendar. From April 1 to November 30 the day includes two waterfalls in Jasper National Park. From December 1 to March 31 it includes Abraham Lake instead. Peyto Lake and Bow Lake are on the itinerary in both seasons. In the warm months, Sunwapta Falls is a two-tiered drop fed by the Athabasca Glacier, with an upper fall and a wider lower fall reached by a short hike. Athabasca Falls is broad rather than tall: the Athabasca River goes over hard quartzite and turns to rapids with a constant roar. In winter the waterfalls are replaced by Abraham Lake, weather permitting, where bubbles lie frozen under the ice. The winter day also includes snowshoeing, with the equipment provided, and hot coffee or tea along the way. Peyto Lake is known for its heart shape, best seen from the viewpoint. Bow Lake takes its turquoise colour from glacial meltwater, and Crowfoot Glacier, named for its three spurs, sits above it. The drive also passes Cascade Mountain and Castle Mountain, and the Bow Valley Parkway is a place to watch for elk, deer and sometimes bears. Some stops may be adjusted or cancelled depending on weather and road conditions.

Sunwapta Falls and Canyon
From April 1 to November 30 this is Sunwapta Falls; from December 1 to March 31 the group visits Abraham Lake instead (weather permitting). Sunwapta Falls is a two-tiered waterfall in Jasper National Park, fed by the Athabasca Glacier. A short hike leads to the upper falls and the wider lower falls.

From April 1 to November 30 this is Athabasca Falls; from December 1 to March 31 the group visits Abraham Lake instead (weather permitting). The stop may be adjusted or cancelled because of weather and road conditions. Here the Athabasca River drops over hard quartzite in a wide, loud series of rapids, with viewpoints that are easy to reach.
-
Abraham Lake
This stop replaces the two waterfalls from December 1 to March 31 and depends on the weather. Abraham Lake is known for the bubbles frozen under its winter ice, a favourite with photographers, with snow-covered peaks all around.
-
Peyto Lake
Peyto Lake in Banff National Park has a heart-shaped outline that shows best from the viewpoint. Its turquoise water stands out against rugged, often snowy terrain.
-
Crowfoot Glacier
The stop may be adjusted or cancelled depending on weather and road conditions. Crowfoot Glacier is named for its three spurs, which look like a crow's foot (the lower toe melted away by the 1940s). It sits on the northeast side of Crowfoot Mountain above Bow Lake, and its runoff feeds the lake and the Bow River.
-
Bow Lake
Bow Lake has turquoise water from glacial meltwater, with mountain peaks and glaciers around it. It is a good place for reflections, photographs and a walk along the shore.
-
Bow Valley Parkway
The Bow Valley Parkway is a scenic road through Banff National Park with views of mountains and valleys. It is also a good drive for wildlife: elk and deer are frequent, and bears are sometimes seen.
