Getting to La Leona takes more than a stroll. The route runs through dense tropical forest along a river canyon, past volcanic caves, up wooden ladders and along ropes, and through pools of clear blue water that lead into the canyon where the turquoise waterfall waits. The local guides meet the group at the town bar parking lot in Curubandé. A 4WD truck covers the next 5 minutes to the start of the trail, and from there the hike is 1.3 miles each way. About 30 minutes are spent at the waterfall itself, for swimming and photos. The whole outing is listed at roughly 3 hours. The booking includes a fresh seasonal fruit snack, a waterproof bag for phones and cameras, life vests when needed, and all fees and taxes. Lunch is not included. Guiding is in English or Spanish, and up to 15 travelers can book together. Two things to know before booking. This experience needs a minimum of 2 travelers per booking, and reservations with fewer than 2 are subject to cancellation with a full refund. The hike also asks for at least a moderate level of fitness. It is not recommended for pregnant travelers, for people with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or bad knees, or for anyone with recent shoulder surgery.
