La Leona is a turquoise cascade inside a narrow volcanic cave that the river has dug out over thousands of years. The hike to it follows the river, and the walk is a good chance to see white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, egrets, bats and blue morpho butterflies. Along the canyon walls, erosion has exposed ancient lava flows. The outing is set at about 3.5 hours and includes a Unimog ride. It starts at the operator's adventure center, 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the Pan-American Highway on the main road to Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. The center has plenty of parking, an open bar and restaurant, and a swimming pool for guests. The booking includes drinking water to refill your own bottle, coffee or tea, and all fees and taxes. A life vest is optional and is recommended for guests who are not strong swimmers. Alcoholic beverages are not included. Up to 10 travelers can book together, with guiding in English or Spanish. A moderate level of fitness is needed, and the hike is not recommended for pregnant travelers or for people with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.
