This hike starts at the operator's office in Curubandé, 20 minutes north of Liberia by way of the villages of Colorado and Curubandé. From there a 4WD vehicle covers the first kilometer to the trailhead, and the walking begins. Guests who drive themselves can leave the car in the private parking lot at the office. La Leona is tucked away on the outskirts of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. The singletrack trail is about 2.7 km each way, roughly 6 km round trip, with some climbing and a few caves to cross. The last part needs a swim of 25 meters to reach the waterfall, and the shoes stay on for it. Footwear matters here. Water shoes or tennis shoes are required, and sandals and flip-flops are not allowed. The hike is open to children 8 and over, and travelers should have at least a moderate level of fitness. It is not recommended for pregnant travelers or for people with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. Entrance fees, dry bags and life vests are included. Gratuities, bottled water and private transportation are not, although the operator quotes a local driver from town on request. Guiding is in English or Spanish, and up to 15 travelers can book together. The trip takes about 3 hours.
