La Leona Waterfall Hike with Lunch, Hotel Pickup and Canyon Swim

The route heads into jungle near Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, crosses the river, and squeezes through a narrow canyon with the help of a rope. It finishes with a swim into a cave where La Leona Waterfall drops into turquoise water. The color comes from the volcanic minerals of the area. On the way there are river crossings, a swim through the canyon, natural water slides and rock jumps, and the guide points out wildlife. The hike is moderate, about 2 km each way, and the guides work at the group's pace and help with the harder sections. Minimum age is 6. The price includes hotel pickup, air-conditioned transport, lunch, bottled water, a life jacket, a dry bag, a bilingual guide and all fees and taxes. Gratuities are optional. Pickup points are listed at Marina Flamingo, Tamarindo and Liberia, among others, and the trip is set at about 4 hours. Guests should wear water shoes or strap sandals, never flip-flops, and bring swimwear, a towel and dry clothes. Up to 12 travelers can book together, in English or Spanish. Infant seats are available. The hike is not recommended for pregnant travelers or for people with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.
