This is a private outing on a lesser-used trail to La Leona Waterfall, deep in the canyons of Río Blanco below Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. The hike lasts about 2 hours at a moderate pace, and a local guide helps the group spot wildlife on the way. The path is shaded and follows the river upstream. It passes 5 natural pools, a stone canyon, caves and small waterfalls before reaching the mouth of the canyon that leads to La Leona. Belongings go into a dry bag there, and the last stretch is a short swim to the waterfall. A stone beach faces the falls, which makes it the spot for photos, and there is a pool for splashing around. Lunch follows the swim. Pickup is offered from a long list of beach areas and resorts, including Tamarindo, Playa Flamingo, Playa Conchal, Playa Hermosa, Playas del Coco, Las Catalinas, Peninsula Papagayo and Liberia. Self-drive guests are asked to arrive at 8:45 am at the meeting point in Curubandé. The full outing runs about 8 hours. The trail has many rocks and roots, with swimming and river crossings, so it is not suited to anyone uncomfortable in the water. Children from 4 up can come, at their parents' discretion. The price covers the park entrance fee, bottled water, lunch, all fees and taxes, life jackets and an air-conditioned vehicle. Gratuities are extra.

  1. La Leona Waterfall

    A private outing on one of the least traveled trails to La Leona. The hike is about 2 hours at a moderate level, beside the blue water of Río Blanco in the canyons below Rincón de la Vieja. The guide points out wildlife along a shaded trail with 5 pools, a stone canyon, caves and small waterfalls. At the canyon entrance, belongings go in a dry bag for the short swim to the waterfall. There is a stone beach for photos and a pool to cool off in before lunch. Children aged 4 and up are welcome, at their parents' discretion. The trail has many rocks and roots, plus swimming and river crossings, and it is not advised for guests who are uneasy in water or have a current injury or health concern. Life jackets are provided.
