Lake Louise, Emerald Lake and Takakkaw Falls: Banff, Yoho and Kootenay Day Tour (12/12)

Three national parks in one day: Banff, Yoho and Kootenay, with a family-owned operator and certified local guides doing the driving and the commentary. The groups are small, and the guide handles planning and logistics. The main stops are Lake Louise, Emerald Lake, the Natural Bridge and Marble Canyon, plus either Takakkaw Falls or Peyto Lake depending on the date. Takakkaw Falls, a 373-metre waterfall, can only be reached from mid or late June to mid-October. When it is closed for the season, the day swaps it for Peyto Lake on the Icefields Parkway, with a short walk to the lookout. Emerald Lake is a year-round stop in Yoho, with trails around the water and room for a picnic. At the Natural Bridge, the Kicking Horse River cuts through the rock. In Kootenay, the Marble Canyon trail takes under 40 minutes and passes waterfalls, including Marble Canyon Falls, and tall rock walls. Lake Louise has its own stop, and the route passes Castle Mountain on the way. A break in Lake Louise Village leaves time to buy food, snacks or souvenirs, or to visit the Visitor Information Centre for a National Park stamp. The tour includes scenic walks, chances to see wildlife and help with photography.

  1. Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, is open to visit all year and known for its turquoise water. Guests can walk the trails, sit by the lake or have a picnic.

  2. Takakkaw Falls

Reachable only from mid or late June to mid-October. Takakkaw Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in Canada, with a 373-metre drop. The name is said to mean "It is magnificent". A short drive and a walk through the valley lead to the foot of the falls.

  3. Natural Bridge

A short stop in Yoho National Park where the Kicking Horse River has cut a channel through old rock. It makes a good photo spot among the Rockies.

  4. Lake Louise

Lake Louise is the best known lake in Banff National Park, with turquoise water and mountains around it. In winter it becomes a skating rink, and in summer people hike and canoe here.

  5. Marble Canyon

An easy trail that takes under 40 minutes and suits everyone. It passes waterfalls, including Marble Canyon Falls, and steep rock formations in Kootenay National Park. It is open all year.

  6. Kootenay National Park

The route crosses Kootenay National Park in British Columbia on the way to Marble Canyon.

  7. Prepare to be stunned by the incredible view of Castle…

Castle Mountain is a rugged peak with a striking profile that stays in view for a long stretch of the drive toward Lake Louise.

  8. Peyto Lake

Used when Takakkaw Falls is closed for the season. Peyto Lake lies along the Icefields Parkway, and its shoreline is said to resemble a wolf. A short walk leads to a lookout over glaciers and mountain peaks, good for photographs.

  9. Lake Louise Visitor Information Centre

A rest stop in Lake Louise Village. Guests can buy food, snacks or souvenirs, or visit the Visitor Information Centre to collect a National Park stamp.
