Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Farm Half-Day Tuk Tuk Trip from Moshi
This five-hour half-day trip leaves from a hotel in Moshi and climbs to Materuni, the last village before the national park land around Mount Kilimanjaro. The ride up is by Tuk Tuk, and the same Tuk Tuk takes guests back to Moshi and drops them wherever they like. At the coffee plantation the guide explains how Arabica is cultivated, harvested and processed. Guests pound the beans out of their shells, roast them, grind them and finish with a cup of the homemade coffee. The walk also passes a banana plantation. The hike to Materuni Waterfall takes 45 minutes, and the terrain can be quite muddy, so sturdy shoes matter. The fall is 90 m tall, and a swim at its foot is optional. Back in the village a Chagga lunch is prepared locally. Freshly brewed banana beer can be tried as well, at an extra cost, and a traditional Chagga dance is part of the day. Lunch, all fees and taxes, and freshly ground local coffee are included. Guiding is in English, and up to 30 travellers can be on one booking. The trip suits all fitness levels, but it is not recommended for travellers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or pregnancy.
