Materuni Waterfall Hike and Coffee Tour with Chagga Lunch, Moana Hostel Pickup

This three-hour trip starts when the local guide meets guests at their accommodation or at Moana Hostel and goes with them up to Materuni. The village lies about 15 km from Moshi, on the northern side of town, and is the last village before Kilimanjaro National Park. The road is part tarmac and part rough. An English-speaking guide leads a moderate hike of about 40 minutes to the waterfall and explains village lifestyle, nature, the local plants and animals and Chagga culture on the way. Swimmers should bring a swimsuit. There is also a chance to taste Chagga banana beer in a local bar. The Chagga share first-hand secrets of what makes a good cup of coffee, to the sound of Chagga songs and dances. After the scenery, the guide leads everyone back to the starting point of the hike for a traditional Chagga lunch such as cooked banana and banana soup. Packing list: swimsuit, good walking shoes, comfortable layers for a climate that swings from cool to warm, a camera, a jacket or fleece for evenings, sunscreen and insect repellent. Homestays can be arranged on request. Private transportation is included, personal items are not. Up to 15 travellers can book together, and the day suits all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travellers with poor cardiovascular health.
