Materuni Waterfalls and Coffee Making Cultural Tour with Burigi Chato Safaris
Burigi Chato Safaris runs this six-hour cultural day from Arusha, where guests meet the guide and are picked up directly at the company's office. A private car takes them up onto the slopes of Kilimanjaro to Materuni, a coffee village in lush rainforest at about 1,800 m above sea level. The day opens at a small coffee farm. The Chagga explain how the coffee is grown, harvested and processed, and guests try processing, roasting and preparing a fresh cup the local way. A hike of 45 minutes through hills and valleys follows, and the guide explains the local plants, how they are used for food and traditional medicine, and Chagga culture. The waterfalls sit in a quiet valley under cliffs up to 200 ft high and drop in a curtain into a small pool, where guests can relax, eat lunch and swim in the cold mountain water. The car then returns to Moshi. Included are the private car, the guide's wages, lunch, and all fees and taxes. Flights, visas and tips for the guide are not. The hike to the base can be demanding, and hiking boots are recommended. Guiding is in English, up to 30 travellers can book together, the day suits all fitness levels and the transport is wheelchair accessible. Bookings are final, with no refund for cancellations.
