One long day in the Guanacaste back country, built around three waterfalls and a stretch of the Río Blanco. The morning opens with a slow float in a tube down the blue river, then a short hike to a small waterfall and a cliff-jumping spot. The jumps come in several heights off a canyon edge of about 45 feet. After that, a 30 minute hike leads along mountain trails, coves, cliffs and ladders toward La Leona. The finish is a swim against the current, pulling along a rope, into the cave where the waterfall falls. Lunch is a traditional casado at a local restaurant in Curubandé. The afternoon goes to the Llanos de Cortés waterfalls, entered by the locals' entrance with a local guide. A 20 minute hike through tropical dry forest ends at a hidden pool for swimming and jumping. A last 5 minute walk climbs to the top of a 90 foot fall for the view, and the group then goes down to the base to swim. Footwear decides who can join. Fully closed-toe sneakers or hiking shoes with thick rubber soles are required, and sandals, Chacos and light water shoes are not accepted, because the ground is slippery and sharp. Included are private transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle, a guide, lunch, snacks, bottled water, alcoholic beverages and a video.

  2. Curubande

A hidden stretch of the Río Blanco, the blue water river. The day starts with a slow float in a tube over turquoise water, then two waterfalls in a canyon shaped by lava, a good photo spot. Cliff jumping follows from a canyon edge of about 45 feet into a blue pool, with lower heights available.

  3. La Leona Waterfall

A 25 minute hike over hard trails, through caves and along cliffs leads to La Leona. The waterfall sits inside a cave, and the last part is a swim along a rope against the river current.

  4. Curubande

Lunch at a local restaurant in Curubandé.

  5. Cataratas Llanos de Cortes

The group enters the Llanos de Cortés waterfalls by the locals' entrance, with a local guide. A 20 minute hike through tropical dry forest beside the river reaches a hidden pool for swimming and cliff jumping. Next comes the viewpoint at the top of the falls for photos, then the base, where there is more swimming.

  • IMPORTANT: Fully closed-toe sneakers or hiking shoes with thick rubber soles are strictly required (No Chacos, sandals, or lightweight water shoes allowed). Because this Indiana Jones-style adventure involves climbing ladders, navigating caves, and walking over sharp, extremely slippery submerged rocks, thin pool/water shoes do not provide enough protection or grip. For your safety, guests without proper athletic shoes or hiking footwear will not be permitted to join the tour.
  • Up to 15 travelers per booking.
  • Mobile or paper ticket accepted
  • Guiding available in: en, es.
