The private version of a mother-and-daughter company's east side day: 5.5 hours in an air-conditioned vehicle, no hiking, and a driver-guide who tells island stories with a bit of humor. The company has more than 17 years of guiding on Kauai, and the route is a mix of sights and tastings rather than a food tour. It starts with the Menehune Fishpond, built in ancient times by the Marquesas Islanders, and a drive through the Kipu Kai area where many Hollywood movies were filmed. A 30-minute bakery stop follows (Kauai Bakery or Orly Patisserie, depending on the day of the week) with fresh pastries, coffee or tea. Wailua Falls, the waterfall in the opening scene of the old Fantasy Island TV show, has time for photos and local street vendors. Lydgate Beach Park comes next for an easy walk, and Opaekaa Falls and the Wailua River lookout in Wailua town finish the sightseeing. Lunch is in historic Kapaa, with 1.5 hours of free time among food trucks, restaurants, smoothie bars and shave ice stands, plus free tastings at Lydgate Farms chocolate and Kauai Gourmet Nuts. The cost of food is not in the tour price, and all purchases support locally owned mom-and-pop shops. Meeting time is 9 am.

  1. Menehune Fish Pond

The day starts with a drive through the scenic backcountry of Lihue to the Menehune Fishpond, a huge pond built in ancient times by the Marquesas Islanders, the first inhabitants of Hawaii. The Menehune legend and the pond's archaeological and cultural meaning come with the drive through the Kipu Kai area, where many Hollywood movies were shot. The vehicle stops twice for photos.

  2. Kukui Grove

A 30-minute break at a local bakery for fresh pastries, coffee or tea. The bakery is Kauai Bakery or Orly Patisserie, depending on the day of the week.

  3. Wailua Falls

Wailua Falls, the waterfall in the opening scene of the old Fantasy Island TV show. There is plenty of time for photos and a look at the local street vendors. No hiking is involved.

  4. Lydgate Beach Park

An easy stroll along the path by Lydgate Beach Park. Optional: soak your feet in the Morgan Ponds. The guide explains the ancient temple where Hawaiians greeted the sunrise each day, the city of refuge and more. It is a leisure walk for all ages with many photo spots. Take free time or stay with the guide for more cultural background.

  5. Opaekaa Falls

A walk to two sites, Opaekaa Falls and the Wailua River lookout, in Wailua town, where Hawaiian royalty lived in ancient times. Good views and photo spots.

  6. Kapaa

Lunch in historic Kapaa town. The guide gives a short orientation, then guests choose among food trucks, restaurants, smoothie bars and shave ice stands, or shop for souvenirs. Free tastings are offered at Lydgate Farms chocolate and Kauai Gourmet Nuts. The group has 1.5 hours here, free time to spend as you like.
