For travellers who have already done the main Banff circuit, this day heads west to Yoho National Park, a smaller and quieter park a little further up the road from Lake Louise. The operator is Radventures, and groups are capped at 12 guests. Takakkaw Falls is the headline. At 1,224 feet it is the tallest waterfall in the Canadian Rockies and the second tallest in Canada. Its name comes from a Cree word for "wonderful", and in early summer meltwater feeds the cascade and throws mist through the pines. Emerald Lake gets 1.5 hours: lakeside trails, canoe rental, or a seat under a tree, with the President Range around the water. Guests on this small-group tour get expedited entry to the shoreline. The Natural Bridge, west of Field, is a rock formation the Kicking Horse River once cut as a waterfall. The Lower Spiral Tunnels viewpoint looks over the 1909 railway tunnels, where a freight train can be seen crossing over itself. In Kootenay National Park, an easy 1.3 km out-and-back trail at Marble Canyon crosses several bridges above the turquoise water of Tokumm Creek. The guide chooses the order of the stops based on weather, big bus tour schedules and other local factors, and adds a few local viewpoints along the way.

  1. Kootenay National Park

Kootenay National Park mixes ice and fire: valleys and canyons cut by glaciers, grasslands shaped by wildfire. A scenic drive along its historic highway shows both.

  2. Marble Canyon

Just across the continental divide, where the Rockies pass from Alberta into British Columbia, an easy 1.3 km out-and-back trail crosses several bridges over Marble Canyon and the turquoise water of Tokumm Creek. The creek cut the canyon through cream-coloured sedimentary rock over thousands of years, a story worth a pause on the trail.

  3. Lower Spiral Tunnels Viewpoint

A roadside viewpoint off the Trans-Canada Highway in Yoho National Park, facing the Lower Spiral Tunnels, built in 1909 so trains could climb Kicking Horse Pass. Freight trains vanish into the mountain and come out higher up, and with good timing one crosses directly over itself. The peaks and valley make the stop worthwhile even without a train.

  4. Emerald Lake

The lake is green, as the name says, and the President Range closes in around it like an amphitheatre of tall peaks and forested banks. Small-group guests get expedited entry to the shoreline, then 1.5 hours to walk the lakeside trails, rent a canoe or sit under a tree.

  5. Natural Bridge

A rock formation over the Kicking Horse River west of Field, where the river leaves the Field valley flats and drops through a canyon toward the Amiskwi River. Lookouts and interpretive displays explain it, and it is a few minutes along Emerald Lake Road. Water carved it from what was once a waterfall: the softer rock under the hard limestone band wore away, and the river found a new path beneath it.

  6. Takakkaw Falls

At 1,224 feet, Takakkaw Falls is the tallest waterfall in the Canadian Rockies and the second tallest in Canada. Melting snow and ice in early summer feed the water and send mist through the pines, and a rainbow sometimes shows at the base. The name comes from the Cree word for "wonderful", and Yoho is also a Cree expression of awe.

  7. Yoho National Park

Yoho is one of the smaller Rockies parks, further along the road from busy Lake Louise and Banff, with snow-capped mountains and loud waterfalls. The Radventures guide picks the visiting order from weather, big bus tour schedules and other local factors, and adds a few local viewpoints along the way.
