Pickup is offered in Calgary, Canmore or Banff, and the day runs north along the Icefields Parkway in a small group, so the guide has time to answer questions along the way. What the group stops for depends on the month. From March to November the focus is water and ice up close: the Athabasca Glacier Forefield Trail, then Sunwapta Falls and Athabasca Falls, both known for their powerful cascades and sculpted rock. From December to mid-March the day turns to winter. The group snowshoes across the snow at Bow Lake, then continues to Abraham Lake to see the methane bubbles trapped under clear blue ice, a favourite subject for photographers. Hot drinks and crampons are included in winter. Between the main stops the route passes Cascade Mountain, Vermilion Lakes, Castle Mountain, Crowfoot Glacier, Bow Lake, Peyto Lake and Waterfowl Lakes. The Icefields Parkway (Highway 93 North) links Banff and Jasper and has been ranked among the ten most picturesque highways in the world. In winter, when Abraham Lake is not on the schedule, alternatives include the Weeping Wall, Athabasca Glacier, Stutfield Glacier Viewpoint, Tangle Creek Falls, Sunwapta Falls, Goats and Glacier Lookout and Athabasca Falls.

Meet at the bus stop on 4 Ave SE, across from Delta Hotels. Arrive 10 minutes before departure. The bus leaves at 7:00 am.

  1. Cascade Mountain is likely the most iconic mountain in…

Cascade Mountain is probably the most recognisable peak in Banff National Park, standing in the Bow River Valley close to the town of Banff.

  2. Vermilion Lakes

Vermilion Lakes are three lakes that reflect Mount Rundle, the peak rising above the town of Banff.

  3. Castle Mountain is a mountain in the Canadian Rockies that…

Castle Mountain, in Banff National Park, looks like a fortress because of the way erosion has shaped its rock.

  4. Icefields Parkway

The Icefields Parkway (Highway 93 North) links Banff and Jasper and is ranked among the ten most picturesque highways in the world. It runs through protected animal habitat and past working glaciers and rivers in the Canadian Rockies.

  5. Crowfoot Glacier

Crowfoot Glacier hangs on the rocky flank of Crowfoot Mountain above Bow Lake in Banff National Park, and it is visible from the Icefields Parkway.

  6. Bow Lake

Bow Lake is one of the largest lakes in Banff National Park, fed by glaciers. Glacial till gives the water its turquoise colour.

  7. Peyto Lake

Peyto Lake is a glacier-fed lake in Banff National Park and one of its most popular. Rock flour carried down from Peyto Glacier gives it a vivid blue colour.

  8. Waterfowl Lakes are beautiful glacier-fed lakes located in…

Waterfowl Lakes are glacier-fed lakes in Banff National Park, Alberta, with mountains on every side. Visitors paddle, hike and stargaze here, and the clear water reflects the peaks for photographs.

  9. Abraham Lake

Winter only, from mid-December to early March and subject to weather. When the turquoise water of Abraham Lake freezes, thousands of white bubbles show beneath the ice. The best viewing is often between mid-January and early February, and the lake typically freezes in mid-December.

  10. Weeping Wall

A winter alternative to Abraham Lake. The Weeping Wall on Cirrus Mountain is a rock face more than 100 metres (about 330 feet) high where water runs down in a series of falls. The most prominent is called Teardrop.

  11. Athabasca Glacier

A winter alternative to Abraham Lake. Athabasca Glacier belongs to the Columbia Icefield, one of the largest icefields in North America. The Toe of the Glacier Trail leads close to the ice, and the glacier's shrinking over the years is a visible sign of climate change.

  12. Stutfield Glacier Viewpoint

A winter alternative to Abraham Lake. Stutfield Glacier is part of the Columbia Icefield and flows down from the mountains, with crevasses and icy blue pools. Visitors stop here for views and photographs.

  13. Tangle Creek Falls

A winter alternative to Abraham Lake. At Tangle Creek Falls, water spills down rocky cliffs in the Canadian Rockies. The surroundings are quiet and the falls make an easy photograph.

  14. (Alternative to Abraham Lake in Winter time) Sunwapta Falls…

A winter alternative to Abraham Lake. Sunwapta Falls lies south of Jasper and drops about 18 metres (around 60 feet). Fed by the Athabasca Glacier, it runs strongest in late spring and early summer, when snow is melting.

  15. (Alternative to Abraham Lake in Winter time) Goats &…

A winter alternative to Abraham Lake. This viewpoint in Jasper National Park looks over snow-covered mountains and the Athabasca River. Mountain goats sometimes feed on the hills, and bears at times wander near the picnic area.

  16. Athabasca Falls

A winter alternative to Abraham Lake. Athabasca Falls, about 30 kilometres south of Jasper, is powerful because of the volume of water rather than its height. The river crashes into the gorge below.
