Two-Day Surabaya Tour to Tumpak Sewu Falls and Bromo with Cemara Lawang Stay
Tumpak Sewu is sometimes called the Indonesian Niagara, and how much water falls depends on the season. The drop is about 120 m. This two-day, one-night trip starts at 6 am with a pickup at a hotel in Surabaya or at Juanda International Airport. The drive to the falls takes about four hours depending on traffic, followed by an hour of hiking from the parking area, with time to stand and take in the view. Back at the car the road continues via Lumajang to Cemara Lawang village, where the night is spent. At 3 am a 4WD jeep climbs to Mount Penanjakan, which at 2702 m is among the highest viewpoints in the area, and the weather decides the colors over Bromo. After sunrise the jeep crosses the grey-black volcanic Sea of Sand and parks near Luhur Poten temple, built in the sand at the foot of Bromo and still in use; it can be looked at when it is open. From the jeep it is a 45 minute walk one way to the rim of the active crater. Then it is back to the hotel for breakfast, a short rest and a shower, check-out, and the return to Surabaya, where the drop-off is at the next destination. The Bromo caldera is 10 km wide, part black sand and part green savanna.
