Turquoise acid lake in the Ijen crater at sunrise with volcanoes rising behind it in East Java

Bromo, Ijen and Tumpak Sewu Tours: 20 Multi-Day Loops, Roughly 120 to 500 EUR

Typically 120 to 250 EUR for three days. Two-day tours skip Ijen, and what separates the rest is hotels, tickets and a refund clause.

A three-day Bromo, Ijen and Tumpak Sewu tour typically costs 120 to 250 EUR across 11 listings. The 20 loops on this page run from the 120 to 250 EUR band for two days to the 250 to 500 EUR band for four, and the gap between two listings with the same three names is mostly hotels, ferries and who pays for the volcano tickets. This page reads the 20: how the nights are cut, what moves the price, what Ijen can do to your itinerary and where the waterfall fits into a trip that is mostly about volcanoes. Seventeen operators sell the 20 listings, and 18 of them are private. The waterfalls and the volcano rules are on the East Java page, and the plain waterfall day is Tumpak Sewu Day Trips.

Short on days? The two-day listings drop Ijen and give you Bromo at sunrise plus Tumpak Sewu for roughly 120 to 500 EUR. If you want the full loop, three days is the shortest version that includes all three names. Tumpak Sewu, the reason this site lists these tours at all, is a stop of a few hours on most of them, and the rest of the programme is volcanoes and driving. The sections below say which hotel and ticket differences explain the money, how the nights are cut, which questions to put to an operator before you pay and when a plain waterfall day is the better buy.

How the nights are cut

The loop is a circle through East Java's volcanoes with a waterfall on it. The usual order runs Tumpak Sewu on the first day, Bromo before dawn on the second and Ijen in the small hours of the third, with the nights spent in a homestay near the falls, a hotel near Bromo and another near Ijen. The tour from Bali we opened runs it the other way round, starting with Ijen. Three listings swap Tumpak Sewu for Madakaripura, the gorge waterfall near Bromo, judging by their titles.

The Bromo morning

Bromo fixes the clock. The 4WD pickup is at 3:00 on one listing and the morning call at 00:30 on another. From the viewpoint the jeeps cross the Sea of Sand, and then it is about 250 steps to the crater rim, 10 to 15 minutes on one itinerary. Crossing the sand on foot takes 30 to 40 minutes, or you pay for a horse: IDR 200,000 or 300,000 on two listings, in neither case included.

The photo shows the jeeps parked on the dark sand with a green hill behind. Some listings put you in a shared jeep, and others in a private one. On the Bromo day listing we read, a shared jeep holds six.

What moves the price

Privacy does not explain the spread. Eighteen of the 20 listings are private, and they run roughly 120 to 500 EUR. What changes is what the night costs and what is left for you to pay at the gate. The chart shows the spread, and the table below the chart takes five listings apart.

Chart of the prices of the 20 Bromo, Ijen & Tumpak Sewu Multi-Day Tours listings on waterfalls.travel, median 237.9 EUR

Same three names, a threefold spread

The two shared tours are both in the 120 to 250 EUR band, near the bottom of the chart, and the cheaper of them puts you in a dormitory in Banyuwangi with no food or drink provided. At the other end, a price in the 250 to 500 EUR band buys three hotel nights, lunch, every park fee, a gas mask and a headlamp for Ijen, and guiding in German, Japanese or Mandarin as well as English.

Between them sit the listings that differ in one thing: a 4-star hotel, a ferry, a pickup in Bali. The unit is the same across the page: private tours here are priced per person, like shared seats, and only the two-day Tumpak Sewu and Bromo trip, in the 250 to 500 EUR band, quotes one price for the whole group.

The Tour Mount Bromo listing, in the 250 to 500 EUR band, deserves a second look: it is the only one we opened that is non-refundable, and it also leaves the park fees to you. The Smartway listing, in the 120 to 250 EUR band, includes the fees and charges IDR 600,000 per group, each way, for the extra car if you start or finish in Surabaya. Divide a total by the nights and the tickets before you compare two numbers.

The cheapest listing is not the cheapest trip until you have added breakfast, dinner and three park tickets.

Ijen, the stop the authorities can cancel

Ijen is walked at night. One listing collects you at 23:30, another at midnight, a third rings the morning call at 00:30. The hike to the rim takes 2 to 3 hours, and then another 45 minutes down to the lake to see the blue flames, which one listing says are heavily dependent on the weather and not guaranteed. A gas mask is included on all five listings we opened, and a headlamp on three. A health certificate is included on some and left to you on one.

The structural risk is bigger than the weather. The crater was closed for more than three weeks in 2026 after fires, and when it reopened tickets were sold only online. One operator also warns of a monthly closure for a local ceremony; ask which date applies to your trip. A listing that includes Ijen sells a day the authorities can cancel, so ask before you pay what the operator does when it does: a substitute, a new date or a refund.

Where the waterfall fits

Tumpak Sewu is the first stop on most loops from Malang or Surabaya, and the time it gets varies more than you would expect. One listing allots 2 to 3 hours at the falls, another 09:30 to 14:30. The cheapest loop does it as a trek to the base, then drives back to Malang for a rest before leaving for Bromo at midnight. The Madakaripura loop we opened reaches it after a three-hour drive from Surabaya and places it before the Bromo night.

If the waterfall is the part you care about, the day trip gives it a whole day for roughly 30 to 250 EUR, as covered on the day-trip page. On a loop it is a third of the programme at most, and in the cheapest version a visit between two nights of little sleep.

Starting from Bali

One listing starts from Seminyak: in the 250 to 500 EUR band for three days, with pickup around 20:00, a private car to Gilimanuk and the ferry tickets included. Another, in the same band, is titled as a drop-off in Bali at the end. The ferry crossing between Ketapang and Gilimanuk takes about an hour. A third listing, starting from Surabaya, offers the Bali drop-off as an extra of SGD 100 per person. Check whether a ferry and a Bali hotel pickup are inside the price, because they are the difference between those two trips.

Who runs them

Seventeen operators sell the 20 listings, and the evidence is concentrated. Cheap Bromo holds 33% of the 942 reviews, all on a single four-day listing in the 250 to 500 EUR band, the dearest on the page. The three most-reviewed listings are that one and two in the 120 to 250 EUR band, so the most trusted ones are at both ends of the price range. Ratings are 4.7 to 5.0 and do not separate anyone. What separates them is what the listing writes down: hotel names, the Ijen policy, the refund clause.

How to choose

Decide first how many nights you will sleep in a car. A two-day loop skips Ijen and is the right size for a short stay. A three-day loop is the standard, 11 of the 20. A four-day loop adds a night and typically costs 250 to 500 EUR, nearly double, so ask what the extra night is. Then read three things: what the park fees are, what the hotels are called and what the refund says. The listing that names its hotels, lists the Ijen conditions and offers free cancellation has told you more than any price can.

Questions about Bromo, Ijen and Tumpak Sewu tours

Can you do Bromo, Ijen and Tumpak Sewu in two days?

Not on the listings we read. All five two-day tours stop at Bromo and Tumpak Sewu and none includes Ijen. The shortest loop with all three names is three days.

Is the Ijen blue fire guaranteed?

No. One listing says outright that seeing it depends heavily on the weather and is not guaranteed, and in 2026 the crater itself was closed for more than three weeks. Ask what the operator does if it is closed before you pay.

Are the Bromo and Ijen entrance fees included?

It varies. Three of the five listings we opened include them, one says the entrance fees are not included and one does not say. Check the not-included list of every listing, and see whether the health certificate for Ijen is on it.

Can I start the loop in Bali?

Yes. One three-day listing starts in Seminyak in the 250 to 500 EUR band, another in the same band ends in Bali, and a Surabaya listing adds a Bali drop-off for SGD 100 per person. The ferry from Gilimanuk to Ketapang takes about an hour and one of the Bali listings includes the tickets.

How fit do I need to be?

Moderate. Ijen is a hike of 2 to 3 hours up in the dark on one itinerary, Bromo has about 250 steps to the rim and Tumpak Sewu has a descent to the base. The Bali listing asks for a high level of fitness, and a 4-star hotel listing calls itself suitable for all levels.

Only the waterfall?

The day-trip page reads 13 listings from under 60 EUR and says whether you need a tour at all.

Data verified on . 20 Viator listings read on 22 Oct 2026, five opened in full. Ijen closure from Indonesian news reports; times and inclusions from the listing itineraries.
