Wailua River Kayak and Secret Falls Hike: Morning Departure, Marina Shuttle, Snacks
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
KauaiThis Secret Falls outing starts at a kiosk at the Coconut Marketplace, under the water tower, and a shuttle carries guests from there to the marina. That removes marina parking fees and the need to find the way. Dry bags, coolers, snacks and drinks are all provided. Departures are in the morning on purpose: the river is calmer then, and the usual afternoon wind and rain are avoided. The route follows the Wailua, Kauai's only navigable river, on a two-mile paddle upstream. A local guide picks the best line, passes Kamokila Village and heads toward the north fork, telling stories of the early Hawaiians who paddled these waters more than 1,500 years ago. Kayaks are then left for a moderate hike through rainforest on the Secret Falls trail in Wailua State Park, mostly on boardwalk, across gentle streams and under tropical foliage. The trail ends at a 120-foot cascade that drops down a mountain cliff. The group paddles back to the starting point afterward.

Wailua River State Park
Kauai is called the Garden Isle for its jungles, waterways and waterfalls set against volcanic mountains, and a kayak is a good way to see them. The paddle starts with two miles up the Wailua, Kauai's only navigable river, past Kamokila Village and toward the north fork, with a local guide telling of the Hawaiians who first paddled here over 1,500 years ago. Then comes a moderate rainforest hike along the Secret Falls trail to a 120-foot cascade that falls down a mountain cliff. The group paddles back to the start afterward.
