10-Hour Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss and Black Beach Small-Group Day Tour (12/12)

This 10-hour small-group day tour covers Iceland's south coast in a minibus with a driver-guide who stays with the group at every stop. The route heads out of Reykjavik through Hveragerdi, Selfoss and Hella before reaching the waterfalls: Seljalandsfoss, where summer visitors can walk behind the 60-metre fall, and Gljufrabui, a hidden one that most visitors miss. Skogafoss comes next, another 60-metre drop that often throws up rainbows in its spray, with a path to the top of the falls. At Solheimajokull, an outlet of the Myrdalsjokull glacier, the group gets close to the ice. A 1.5-hour guided glacier hike with all safety equipment can be added between April and October, though it may be cancelled for weather or safety reasons; other activities replace it where possible, and otherwise a partial refund is given. The day ends at Reynisfjara black sand beach, with basalt columns against the cliffs, Atlantic waves on volcanic sand and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks offshore. The Dyrholaey arches can be seen in the distance. Hotel pickup and drop-off, Wi-Fi on board and an English-speaking driver-guide are included; food and drinks are not. Bring warm, wind and waterproof clothes and good hiking shoes. Minimum age is 10, up to 15 travelers per booking, and a moderate level of fitness is expected.

Itinerary

The map could not be loaded. Please try again in a moment.

  1. Hveragerdi

Town known for its greenhouses and the Reykjadalur "Hot River", set in a rift valley between the Eurasian and North American plates.

  2. Selfoss

Selfoss is the biggest town in South Iceland.

  3. Hella

Hella takes its name from the caves near the river.

  4. Once you reach the town

From this town the main sights of the day are not far off.

  5. Seljalandsfoss waterfall

The waterfall drops 60 metres off the side of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, and the path leads right up to it. In summer visitors can walk behind the fall.

  6. Gljufrabui Waterfalls

A hidden waterfall that most visitors miss. The guide points out where to find it.

  7. Volcano Eyjafjallajokull

Ask the guide about the huge 2010 eruption here, which put Iceland on the world map.

  8. Skogafoss

One of the best-known waterfalls in the world, seen in Game of Thrones. It faces south, so the spray from the 60-metre drop often throws up rainbows. A path leads to the top of the falls for the view from above.

  9. Solheimajokull Glacier

Solheimajokull is an outlet of Myrdalsjokull, one of Iceland's largest glaciers. From April to October a guided glacier hike with safety equipment can be booked as an optional extra.

  10. Dyrholaey

The stone sea arches of Dyrholaey are visible in the distance from Reynisfjara black sand beach.

  11. Reynisfjara Beach

The black sand beach at Reynisfjara has basalt columns lining the cliffs, volcanic sand hit by powerful Atlantic waves and the jagged Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising just offshore.
