This 13.5-hour small-group day from Reykjavik ties two waterfalls, a black sand beach and a beginner-friendly glacier hike into one route. Pickup and drop-off are from select stops in the city, with Reykjavik City Hall as the starting point, and a short break at the Lava Centre in Hvolsvollur gives time for the restroom and food and drinks to take away. At Skogafoss, a 60-metre drop into a misty basin, visitors can walk up to the spray or climb the staircase for a view over the valley. Reynisfjara has basalt columns, the Reynisdrangar sea stacks and strong waves, with safety guidance about sneaker waves. The glacier part is the core: a certified English-speaking guide meets the group at the parking lot, crampons, helmet, harness and walking ice axe are handed out, and a walk through a mossy valley leads above Solheimajokull. About 1.5 hours on the ice follows, among ridges, crevasses and blue formations. The hike is rated easy to moderate, covers roughly 6 km of uneven ground and needs no experience. Seljalandsfoss ends the day, with a path behind the falls that may be icy or closed in winter, when the waterfall is lit up. Hiking boots with ankle support are mandatory and can be rented for a fee. Minimum age is 8, shoe sizes 35 to 50 EU fit the crampons, and food and drinks are not included. Not recommended with poor cardiovascular health.

Itinerary

  1. Reykjavik City Hall

No car needed: the trip to the south coast starts with a pickup at select stops in Reykjavik.

  2. Hvolsvollur

A brief stop at the Lava Centre in Hvolsvollur, with restrooms and food and drinks to take away.

  3. Skogafoss

Skogafoss crashes 60 metres into a wide, misty basin. Visitors can walk up to the spray for photos or climb the staircase beside the fall for views over the valley and the coast.

  4. Reynisfjara Beach

Iceland's most famous black sand beach, where basalt columns rise like a cathedral and the Atlantic surf pounds in. The Reynisdrangar sea stacks stand offshore. The guide gives safety advice about the powerful sneaker waves, and there is time for a leisurely walk along the beach and its caverns.

  5. Solheimajokull Glacier

A beginner-friendly guided hike on Solheimajokull, an outlet of Myrdalsjokull. The small group meets the certified glacier guide at the parking lot, puts on crampons, takes an ice axe and helmet, and walks through a quiet mossy valley to reach the glacier from above, with a panoramic view before stepping on the ice. About 1.5 hours are spent on the glacier among ice ridges, crevasses and blue formations, with stories from the guide about climate and history and time for photos. No glacier experience is needed.

  6. Seljalandsfoss waterfall

A waterfall with a pathway that lets visitors see the cascade from behind. In winter the trail can be icy or closed, but the view from the front, with cliffs, mossy rock and shifting light, still works. In winter months the waterfall is lit up, which makes it the final stop of the day after dark.

  7. Reykjavik City Hall

The minibus returns to the capital and drops everyone at the selected pickup point.
