This 13.5-hour small-group minibus day from Reykjavik collects the south coast highlights and adds the DC-3 plane wreck. Pickup is from select locations in the city, with a short stop at a service station in Hvolsvollur for restrooms, snacks and drinks. Skogafoss comes first: a 60-metre drop whose mist often makes double rainbows on sunny days, with a walk to the base or 527 steps up to an observation deck. Reynisfjara is the sightseeing and lunch stop, with hexagonal basalt columns, the Reynisdrangar sea stacks and a safety briefing about sneaker waves. At the Solheimasandur parking area a transfer vehicle drives across the black sands to the abandoned US Navy DC-3, saving the almost two-hour walk across the sand field, with time to explore and photograph the wreck. Vik church gives a view of the town and sea stacks. Dyrholaey is a 120-metre promontory with 360-degree views, a large sea-carved stone arch and a white lighthouse over a century old; puffins can be seen in summer. Solheimajokull is a viewing stop at the retreating ice wall and glacial lagoon, without a guided hike onto the ice. Seljalandsfoss ends the day, with a wide cavern that lets visitors circle the fall behind a 60-metre curtain of water, so waterproof gear helps. Food and drink are not included. The driver-guide speaks English, WiFi is on board, and up to 15 travelers can book at once.

Itinerary

The map could not be loaded. Please try again in a moment.

  1. Reykjavik

The tour starts with pickup at select locations in Reykjavik, followed by a scenic drive to the South Coast.

  2. Hvolsvollur

A brief stop at a service station, where guests can use the restrooms and buy snacks and drinks.

  3. Skogafoss

One of Iceland's biggest waterfalls, with a 60-metre drop and a mist that often forms vivid double rainbows on sunny days. Visitors can walk to the base of the falls or climb 527 steps to an observation deck for views of the coastline and the Eyjafjallajokull glacier volcano.

  4. Next

A sightseeing stop and lunch break at Reynisfjara, on its famous black sands, voted one of the most beautiful non-tropical beaches on Earth. Hexagonal basalt columns and the jagged Reynisdrangar sea stacks rise from the North Atlantic. The guide gives a safety briefing on sneaker waves; the signage shows the current warning level.

  5. Crashed DC 3 Plane

At the Solheimasandur parking area a transfer vehicle crosses the black sands to the DC-3, an abandoned US Navy aircraft seen in music videos and films. There is time to walk around the wreck and take photos, then the transfer returns, with no need for the almost two-hour walk.

  6. Vik Church

A visit to Vik church for views over the town and the sea stacks.

  7. Dyrholaey

Dyrholaey, meaning Door Hill Island, is a 120-metre promontory with 360-degree views: west along the black coastline toward Seljalandsfoss, east to the Reynisdrangar. The guide leads to the best spots for the big sea-carved stone arch and the white lighthouse that has stood over these cliffs for more than a century.

  8. Solheimajokull Glacier

Solheimajokull is an outlet glacier flowing from the Myrdalsjokull ice cap. A walk leads to the edge of the retreating ice wall and its glacial lagoon. This stop is for viewing from the lagoon area and does not include a guided hike onto the ice.

  9. Seljalandsfoss waterfall

A waterfall with a 60-metre curtain of water that can be walked behind. A wide cavern allows a full circle around the falls, with a view of the South Coast through the mist. Waterproof gear is recommended because of the spray.

  10. Reykjavik

The drive back to Reykjavik ends with a drop-off at the selected stop.
