2-Day Blue Ice Cave, Jokulsarlon and South Coast Tour with Overnight Stay
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
ReykjavikThis two-day small-group tour from Reykjavik runs along Route 1 to the south coast on day one and carries on to Jokulsarlon and a blue ice cave on day two. Day one passes Hveragerdi and Selfoss, then reaches Seljalandsfoss, Gljufrabui, Skogafoss, Solheimajokull and the Reynisfjara black sand beach. After a night in the included accommodation, the second day stops briefly in Vik, crosses the Eldhraun lava field, and visits Hofskirkja, the last turf church built in Iceland. Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and the nearby Diamond Beach come next. The highlight is the Vatnajokull blue ice cave trip, which starts with a superjeep ride; if weather or safety rules out the caves, other activities are found where possible and the price difference is refunded. The minibus is heated or air-conditioned. Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Reykjavik, breakfast, a professional guide, WiFi on board and all tour activities are included. Lunch, dinner and gratuities are not. Luggage is limited to small carry-ons such as backpacks, with free storage offered at the NiceTravel office at Fiskislod 45, Space M. Minimum age is 8, groups are capped at 14 travelers per booking, and moderate fitness is expected. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or pregnancy. Wear warm, waterproof clothes and good hiking shoes.

-
Hveragerdi
Day one leaves Reykjavik on Route 1, passing small towns and open countryside. Hveragerdi comes up on the way, a town known for its greenhouses and the geothermal Reykjadalur "Hot River", set in a rift valley between the Eurasian and North American plates.
-
Selfoss
The route goes through Selfoss, the largest town and capital of South Iceland, as it continues along the road.
-
Seljalandsfoss
A close look at Seljalandsfoss, which drops 60 metres from the side of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano.
-
Gljufrabui Waterfalls
Gljufrabui is a hidden waterfall that many visitors overlook. The guide leads the group to it.
-
Volcano Eyjafjallajokull
The guide can explain the huge 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, the event that put Iceland in the world news.
-
Skogafoss
Skogafoss was a filming location for Game of Thrones. It faces south, so the mist from its 60-metre (197 feet) drop often makes rainbows. A climb to the top gives a wide view over the area.
-
Solheimajokull Glacier
Solheimajokull is an outlet of Myrdalsjokull, one of Iceland's largest glaciers. The stop gets the group close to its ice cap.
-
Dyrholaey
From Reynisfjara black sand beach the stone sea arches of Dyrholaey can be seen in the distance.
-
Reynisfjara Beach
Reynisfjara is a black sand beach with basalt columns lining the cliffs, Atlantic waves breaking on volcanic sand and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks standing just offshore.
-
Vik
On day two a short stop in Vik village, with views of the black sand beach and the hills around the town.
-
Eldhraun Lava Field
Eldhraun is a wide lava field where thick moss covers old lava formations, with soft green growth against dark volcanic rock.
-
Hofskirkja Church
Hofskirkja is the last turf church built in Iceland, from the 19th century. Its thick turf roof sits among moss-covered burial mounds.
-
Glacier Lagoon
Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon has appeared in many Hollywood films. Wind and tides slowly move the icebergs, and seals may be seen swimming among the ice or resting on nearby beaches.
-
Fellsfjara
Diamond Beach is a short walk from the lagoon. Fragments of colorful icebergs lie across its black sand, shaped by wind and Atlantic waves.
-
Vatnajokull National Park
The blue ice cave expedition is the tour's highlight. A superjeep ride leads to natural caves formed deep inside glaciers as fresh water freezes in winter. New caves appear each year as the glaciers melt, refreeze and change shape, so a cave may not look the same again. Local guides take the group into the caves, then the route returns to Jokulsarlon and on to Reykjavik with a stop in Vik.
