2-Day South Coast Tour: Solheimajokull Glacier Hike, Jokulsarlon, Fjadrargljufur
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
ReykjavikTwo days along the south coast pair a guided blue-ice hike on Solheimajokull with Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, where icebergs drift in ice-cold water and seals swim around them. Day one runs from Reykjavik past Hveragerdi and Selfoss to Seljalandsfoss, whose cave path goes behind the fall, then Gljufrabui, Skogafoss and Reynisfjara black sand beach. The glacier guides supply the safety gear (crampons, ice axes and so on) and teach how to use it before the group steps onto the ice to see ice sculptures and deep crevasses. Day two begins with a short stop in Vik, then crosses the Eldhraun lava field, walks to the Fjadrargljufur canyon and stops at Hofskirkja, the last turf church of its type built in Iceland. At Jokulsarlon, in front of the biggest glacier in Europe, a 45-minute amphibious boat tour among the icebergs can be added as an option; Diamond Beach lies a few hundred yards away. One night in a double or twin room is included, along with breakfast, Wi-Fi and USB chargers on the bus, and an English-speaking guide. Lunch and dinner are bought at scheduled stops. The tour typically returns to Reykjavik on day two around 9:30 PM. Only small carry-on luggage is allowed, and free storage is offered at the NiceTravel office at Fiskislod 45, Space M. Wear warm, wind and waterproof clothes and bring good hiking shoes, which can be rented. Up to 15 travelers per booking.

-
Hveragerdi
A town known for its greenhouses and the Reykjadalur "Hot River", set in a rift valley between the Eurasian and American continental plates.
-
Selfoss
Selfoss is the largest town in South Iceland and its capital.
-
Seljalandsfoss waterfall
The waterfall falls 60 metres off the side of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano and can be reached up close. A path leads through the cave behind the fall.
-
Gljufrabui Waterfalls
A hidden waterfall that most visitors miss. The guide shows where to find it.
-
Volcano Eyjafjallajokull
Ask the guide about the huge 2010 eruption here, the one that made Iceland known worldwide.
-
Skogafoss
One of the world's best-known waterfalls, seen in Game of Thrones. It faces south, so the spray from its 60-metre drop often forms rainbows. Visitors can climb to the top for the view from above.
-
Solheimajokull Glacier
Solheimajokull is part of Myrdalsjokull, one of the country's largest glaciers. The group hikes on it with all safety equipment provided, stepping onto the ice with an experienced glacier guide.
-
Dyrholaey
The stone sea arches of Dyrholaey can be seen in the distance from Reynisfjara black sand beach.
-
Reynisfjara Beach
A world-famous black sand beach where basalt columns line the cliffs, powerful Atlantic waves pound the volcanic sand and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rise just offshore.
-
Vik
Day two opens with a short stop in Vik, with views over the black sand beach and the hills around the small settlement.
-
Eldhraun Lava Field
A barren stretch of lava formations covered in moss.
-
Fjadrargljufur Canyon
A winding green river gorge about a hundred metres deep and nearly two kilometres long, which became widely known after appearing in a Justin Bieber music video.
-
Hofskirkja Church
The last church of its type built in Iceland, from the 19th century. Deep layers of turf form the roof, and moss-covered burial mounds surround it.
-
Glacier Lagoon
A bucket-list spot used in several Hollywood movies, yet peaceful. Wind and tides keep moving the icebergs around. A 45-minute amphibious boat tour goes among the bergs, close to the ice, with a chance of seeing a seal.
-
Fellsfjara
Diamond Beach is a few hundred yards from the lagoon and is named for the sparkling fragments of multi-colored icebergs on its black sand, slowly shaped by wind and waves.
