  1. Angkor Wat

Day 1: the group is collected at the hotel at 8:00 am for Angkor Wat, with time to see local villages and the forest around it. It is the largest religious monument in the world and the best preserved, built to represent Mount Meru, and it faces west, unlike most Angkor temples. Visitors come for its bas-reliefs and the many devatas on its walls.

    Extra fee

  2. Angkor Thom

Angkor Thom was a fortified capital of the Khmer Empire, originally called Yashodarapura and founded by Yasovarman I. Its name means great city. Tower gates with statues of gods and demons mark each cardinal direction.

    Extra fee

  3. Bayon Temple

The Bayon stands at the center of Angkor Thom, built by Jayavarman VII for the Mahayana Buddhist deity Lokesvara. Its 49 towers each carry four smiling faces, which look toward the four directions. Some scholars read it as a stone map of Cambodia's 54 provinces of the time: 49 towers plus 5 city gates make 54.

    Extra fee

  4. Baphuon is an impressive Hindu Monument built by King…

Baphuon is a Hindu pyramid temple dedicated to Shiva, built by Udayadityavarman II between 1050 and 1066. A raised walkway links it to the main entrance, and the top platform gives views over the surrounding jungle.

    Extra fee

  5. Terrace of the Elephants

The Terrace of the Elephants faces the royal palace and served as a royal conference hall. Its wall shows carved elephants in combat. Elephants carried kings, the royal family and generals, and hauled sandstone from the quarry to the temple builders.

    Extra fee

  6. Ta Prohm

Ta Prohm is the best-known jungle temple in Cambodia and a filming location for Tomb Raider. Jayavarman VII built it in 1186 for his mother, as a monastery called Rajavihara, and it also worked as a royal Buddhist school. Early morning and late afternoon are quietest.

    Extra fee

  7. Pre Rup

Pre Rup is a large brick temple from 961, the state temple of Rajendravarman II, dedicated to Shiva. The name means turn the body, from the belief that funeral ashes were turned in different directions during the ceremony.

    Extra fee

  8. Phnom Bakheng

Phnom Bakheng is the most popular sunset spot in Angkor, with a Hindu temple on top built by Yasovarman, where the Khmer capital stood before Angkor Thom. The summit looks over Angkor, nearby villages and farms. The day ends with a transfer back to the hotel in Siem Reap.

    Extra fee

  9. Angkor Wat

Day 2: lobby pickup at 4:30 am for sunrise at Angkor Wat. The best spot is behind the reflecting pool in front of the main temple, where the colors of the sky show in the water. Afterward the group returns to the hotel for breakfast and a rest.

    Extra fee

  10. Banteay Srei

Banteay Srei, the Lady Temple, is a pink stone temple about 37 km from Angkor Wat, small but remarkably well preserved and finely decorated. It was built from 967 by Rajendravarman II for Shiva and originally called Isvarapura. French explorers found it in 1914, and it was cleared in 1924.

    Extra fee

  11. Preah Khan Temple

Preah Khan, the Holy Sword Temple, is one of the largest temple complexes in the area, mostly in good condition with fine Khmer carvings. It was dedicated to the king's father and worked as a royal school.

    Extra fee

  12. Ta Som

Ta Som is a Mahayana Buddhist temple of Jayavarman VII, probably dedicated to his father. Its east gate is still gripped by tree roots.

    Extra fee

  13. Neak Pean

Neak Pean stands in the middle of an artificial lake, surrounded by water. The name means entwined serpents. It was one of Jayavarman VII's hospitals: four pools for water, earth, fire and wind were meant to balance the bather, each fed from a central tank through a conduit guarded by an elephant, bull, horse or lion.

    Extra fee

  14. Banteay Samre

Banteay Samre is a quiet Hindu temple in the Angkor Wat style, built by Suryavarman II and restored by Maurice Glaize from 1936 to 1944. Its stone carvings are well preserved, and the single tower resembles Thommanon and Chau Say Tevoda.

    Extra fee

  15. Phnom Kulen National Park

Day 3: Phnom Kulen, the Lychee Mountain, is a sacred mountain, a national park and an archaeological site. It holds waterfalls, a reclining Buddha, a river of a thousand lingas, Srah Damrei and the Bat Cave. It is also the birthplace of the Khmer Empire, where Jayavarman II proclaimed himself god-king.

    Extra fee

  16. Prasat Beng Mealea

Beng Mealea is a remote jungle temple about 66 km northeast of Siem Reap by road, left in its ruined state with no restoration. It opened to visitors in the early 2000s after the land mines were cleared. Suryavarman II built it and Dharanindravarman II completed it. Fallen stones and dark galleries call for care while walking.

    Extra fee

  17. Tonle Sap Lake

Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, near the center of Cambodia. Over 200 fish species live there, and about 60% of Cambodians make a living from it. UNESCO named it a Biosphere Reserve in 1997. The tour ends with the transfer back to the hotel in Siem Reap.
