Angkor Wat and Phnom Kulen Multi-Day Tours

20 packages of two to five days, from under 120 to more than 250 EUR. None of the seven we opened includes the Angkor Pass, and Kulen always gets a day of its own.

Not one of the seven Angkor and Kulen packages we opened includes the Angkor Pass, and only one includes the Kulen ticket. That is the headline for a format where the price on the card is typically 120 to 250 EUR and the real bill has two tickets and several meals on top. The 20 packages run two to five days, and 10 of them are two-day trips. Priced per tour day, the typical price is 30 to 120 EUR for the 15 listings not priced per group, a spread of more than two to one; the five group-priced tours are left out. This page reads the packages as itineraries: where Kulen falls, what moves the price, and how many days you need. The longest runs five days and reaches Koh Ker, far to the northeast.

If you only want the waterfall, the day tours are cheaper and shorter. For the ticket, the one-way road and the history, see the Phnom Kulen page. This page is for travelers who were going to hire a guide for Angkor anyway. Seven of the 20 packages were opened in full, and every claim about what a package includes comes from those seven. The other thirteen were read from their titles, prices and listed days, and they may differ. One thing to know before comparing prices: private packages here are per person unless the listing says otherwise, and five of the private ones that state a pricing unit quote a single price for the whole group, so read the unit before you read the number.

Angkor and Kulen multi-day tours: what the 20 packages sell

By length, the 20 packages split into 10 two-day tours, 7 three-day tours, 2 four-day tours and one five-day tour. Seventeen are private and three are shared, all of them two-day. Eleven operators sell them, and one, Asean Angkor Guide, holds 55% of the 593 reviews. A single three-day private tour has 219 of them.

A 5.0 on four reviews tells you nothing. Sixteen of these 20 packages have fewer than 30.

Treat the rating as a sign that nobody has complained so far, not as a ranking.

4 days2roughly 120 to 500 EUR250 to 500 EUR
5 days1250 to 500 EUR250 to 500 EUR

The three cheapest packages are the three shared two-day tours, in the 60 to 120 EUR band. The private ones start in the same band for two days. Listed hours are unreliable here: a package titled three days is listed at 20 hours and one titled two days at 16, so go by the title and the itinerary.

Collapsed stone blocks and a jungle-covered gateway at Beng Mealea temple, Siem Reap Province

Beng Mealea

The day that competes with Kulen

Two of the three-day packages put Kulen and Beng Mealea on the same day, and one of them adds the Tonle Sap lake as well. A listing gives Beng Mealea as 66 km by road from Siem Reap, so that is a long day in a vehicle before the temple walk.

The five-day package spends a whole day on Koh Ker and Beng Mealea and leaves Kulen to the last day. If a package says it does all of them, count the hours of driving, not the stops.

Where Kulen falls in the plan

The sequence is the most useful thing a package tells you. In all seven we opened, Kulen has a day of its own, and sunrise at Angkor Wat never shares a day with it. A sunrise pickup runs 4:30 to 5:00 am, and the uphill road to Kulen closes at 11:00, so a package that tried both would give you neither a rested morning nor a relaxed mountain.

Where Kulen comes first, as in the 2-day private package and the first 3-day private one in the table, the mountain is done before the temple days start. Where it comes last, as in the five-day tour, it works as a rest from temples. Neither is wrong. The first suits someone who wants the waterfall out of the way, the second someone who wants a change of pace.

Chart of the prices of the 20 Angkor & Kulen Multi-Day Tours listings on waterfalls.travel, median 192.6 EUR

The price chart

What moves the price

Each mark in the chart is one package. The three blue dots are the shared tours in the 60 to 120 EUR band. The 17 orange marks are the private tours, spread from roughly 60 to 500 EUR, and the chart note says private tours are priced per person, with a few operators pricing the whole group. Here five of the private Viator listings that state a pricing unit do: two two-day tours and three three-day tours, all in the 250 to 500 EUR band.

Two three-day private tours show the problem. One is in the 120 to 250 EUR band and lists breakfast on day 3. The other is in the 250 to 500 EUR band, a price for the whole group, and lists parking and fuel; the first is per person, so which is cheaper depends on how many of you travel. Both leave out the Angkor Pass and the Kulen ticket. Read the inclusions line before the price.

Three ways the days are built

Read across the seven, the packages follow a few patterns. The first is temples first, Kulen second, as in the shared two-day tour. Day one starts at 4:30 to 5:00 am with Angkor Wat at sunrise, then breakfast in a village and a run through Pre Rup, Ta Prohm and Bayon. Day two is a pickup at 8:00 to 8:30 for the cliff viewpoint, the carved riverbed, the Buddha and a picnic at the waterfall.

The second is Kulen first, as in the private two-day tour: the mountain and the floating village of Kampong Phluk on day one, then Angkor Wat at 5:00 am on day two with Angkor Thom, Bayon, Baphuon and Ta Prohm. The third is the wide net. The five-day tour covers Angkor Thom, Angkor Wat, the Roluos group, Banteay Srei, Koh Ker and Beng Mealea before it reaches Kulen on day five, with shopping at Artisans Angkor in the afternoon.

When the extra days are best

A multi-day package has two seasons inside it. The temples work all year, but the waterfall and the floating village both depend on the water. One three-day listing says August to January is best for Kulen and Kampong Phluk, and another operator warns that the floating villages are at their least scenic from the end of March to the end of July, when water levels fall. Together with the November to January window for Kulen itself, that points to the cooler months at the end of the year for any package that includes both.

The pass arithmetic

The Angkor Pass is sold for 1, 3 or 7 days, and its price changes, so check the current tariff. The Kulen ticket is paid in cash. Boat tickets for the Tonle Sap floating villages are extra in the listings that include them. Meals are extra in most. A three-day package in the 120 to 250 EUR band can end up with several tickets and most meals on top.

How many days a three-day pass stays valid is something to confirm with the seller at angkorenterprise.gov.kh. The guides we read disagree. Several packages have the guide take you to buy the pass on the first morning.

How many days do you need for Angkor and Kulen?

Two days is the minimum that keeps Kulen from stealing a temple day. Day one is sunrise and the main temples, day two the mountain. Three days adds the outer temples, Banteay Srei and a floating village, and it is a comfortable length for the temples. Four and five days add Beng Mealea and Koh Ker, with long drives. The extra days are temple days. Kulen stays one day in every package, whichever length you pick.

Mistakes people make with multi-day packages

The usual one is dividing the package price by the days and calling it cheap, without adding the passes. The second is assuming a package includes the Kulen ticket, when 6 of the 7 do not. The third is choosing by the 5.0 rating, which in this group rests on very few reviews.

Questions about Angkor and Kulen multi-day tours

How many days do you need for Angkor and Kulen?

Two days is the minimum: sunrise and the main temples on one, Kulen on the other. Three days is more comfortable and adds the outer temples and a floating village. Ten of the 20 packages are two days and 7 are three.

Is the Angkor Pass included in these tours?

Not in any of the seven we opened. The pass is sold for 1, 3 or 7 days, and its price changes, so check the current tariff. Several packages have the guide take you to buy it on the first morning.

Does the Angkor Pass cover Phnom Kulen?

No. Phnom Kulen National Park sells its own one-day ticket, paid in cash. Only one of the seven packages we opened includes it, the shared two-day tour.

Can I do Kulen and the Angkor Wat sunrise on the same day?

None of the seven packages does. Sunrise pickups run 4:30 to 5:00 am, listings put the drive to Kulen at 1.5 to 2 hours each way, and the uphill road closes at 11:00. Keep them on separate days.

Should I book a private or a shared package?

Only three of the 20 are shared, all of them two-day tours in the 60 to 120 EUR band. Everything longer is private. Most private prices are per person; five (two two-day and three three-day tours, all in the 250 to 500 EUR band) quote one price for the whole group, so check which kind you are looking at.

How much does a three-day Angkor tour with Kulen cost?

Listed prices run roughly 120 to 500 EUR, typically 120 to 250 EUR. Add the Angkor Pass, the Kulen ticket, boat tickets and meals, since the packages we opened leave most of them out.

Only want the waterfall?

The 20 day tours run from under 30 to more than 120 EUR, and the page reads which of them include the ticket.
