A local driver-guide runs this 10-hour minibus day tour east from Reykjavik, with live commentary on board and no more than 17 passengers (no big buses). Skogafoss is the first big stop, where walkers can go as close to the spray as they dare. Dyrholaey follows, with panoramic views over black sand beaches and the coast through a rock arch, and nesting puffins in summer. Reynisfjara is a stretch of coast known for its beauty, eeriness and hexagonal basalt columns, with the sea caves open to explore if the tide is right. In Vik i Myrdal, Iceland's southernmost village, the meal stop offers lamb soup or the black dough pizza, paid for separately, and the village is home to the basalt sea stacks that legend says are trolls turned to stone while playing in the sea. Solheimajokull glacier tongue is an offshoot of Myrdalsjokull, the ice cap over the Katla volcano, and a walk of about 15 minutes from the parking lot leads to a viewpoint. Seljalandsfoss, over sixty metres tall, falls from a cliff that curves inward, so the path behind it is open when there is no ice. Hotel pickup cannot be guaranteed from every hotel because of driving restrictions in Reykjavik; guests in the restricted area meet at a bus stop a few minutes away. Pushchairs, infant seats and service animals are possible if the operator is told. Food and drinks are not included. Up to 15 travelers per booking.

  1. Skogafoss

Skogafoss is hugely impressive in scale, with spray rising where the water hits the rocks below. Visitors can walk as close as they dare.

  2. Dyrholaey

Dyrholaey gives wide views of black sand beaches and the coast, framed by a rock arch. In summer, nesting puffins can be watched.

  3. Reynisfjara Beach

A coastline known for beauty, eeriness and dramatic geology, with many hexagonal basalt columns and good photography. Puffins may be spotted on the cliffs in summer.

  4. Vik

A meal stop in Vik i Myrdal, Iceland's southernmost village, where lamb soup or the black dough pizza is on the menu. Meals are not included in the price.

  5. Solheimajokull Glacier

The glacier tongue comes off Myrdalsjokull, the ice cap that covers the Katla volcano, whose eruptions are even bigger than those of Eyjafjallajokull. A walk of about 15 minutes from the parking lot leads to a viewpoint.

  6. Seljalandsfoss waterfall

The fall is over sixty metres tall and drops from a cliff that curves inward, so when there is no ice on the ground the path behind it can be walked, which makes for good photographs.
