Mercury Grail - Icelandic Adventures operates this 10-hour private tour from Reykjavik along the south coast, past the volcanic ground that runs beside the Atlantic. Seljalandsfoss is the first of the waterfalls, 65 meters tall according to the National Land Survey of Iceland. Skógafoss is next, probably the most famous waterfall on the Ring Road because it is an easy drive from Reykjavik and visible from the highway. It was a filming location for the series Vikings and for the Marvel film Thor. Dyrhólaey lies between Seljalandsfoss and the town of Vík. The rock formation is home to several bird species and gives wide views of the south, but the formation itself is closed to pedestrians. A road leads up for views of the nesting area and the southwest beaches, and a road leads down for a different view of the rock to the southeast. The roads are not fully paved. The route passes Eyjafjallajökull, an ice-capped stratovolcano that erupted in March 2010, and includes the black sand beach of Reynisfjara, good for a leisurely walk past rock formations and sea birds. Hotel pickup and drop-off, a professional driver-guide and a private vehicle are included. Food, drinks, alcohol, gratuities, the Lava Centre exhibition and the Skógar open art museum and technical museum are not. The vehicle is wheelchair accessible, a moderate level of fitness is expected, and a booking takes between 2 and 8 travelers, with guiding in English.

  1. Reykjavik

  2. Seljalandsfoss waterfall

One of Iceland's best-known waterfalls, 65 meters tall according to the National Land Survey of Iceland. It is an easy and rewarding stop on any south coast route.

  3. Skogafoss

Probably the most famous waterfall on the Ring Road, since it is an easy drive from Reykjavik and plainly visible from the highway. It leaves a strong impression when it comes into view. The series Vikings and the Marvel film Thor were both filmed here.

  4. Dyrholaey

A natural rock formation between Seljalandsfoss and the small town of Vík, home to several bird species and known for wide views of the south. The formation itself is closed to walkers. Two roads give access: one climbs to views of the rock, the nesting area and the southwest beaches, so far that on a sunny day Skógafoss can be seen. The other descends to a different view of the formation to the southeast. Neither road is fully paved, and SUVs are recommended. Birdwatchers should check the season. The spot also suits a picnic lunch.

  5. Volcano Eyjafjallajokull

Eyjafjallajökull is a stratovolcano under an ice cap, north of Skógar and west of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. A pass of ice-free land about 2 km wide separates it from the Katla volcano. The 2010 eruption was first noticed around midnight on 20 March, when a red cloud lit the sky. A fissure about 500 m long opened with fire fountains and lava flows. Two new craters erupted about a week later, throwing out magma and lava.
