Private South Coast Tours from Reykjavik
18 private day listings from roughly 250 to more than 1,000 EUR, typically above 1,000. The same ten hours is listed in the 250 to 500 EUR band and above 1,000 EUR because the cheap ones are priced per person and the dear ones for the whole booking.
A private South Coast tour from Reykjavik lists in the 250 to 500 EUR band and above 1,000 EUR for the same ten hours, with almost the same stops. The typical price across the 18 private day listings is above 1,000 EUR, and the gap is mostly a matter of units. Five listings, at roughly 250 to 1,000 EUR, are priced per person. Thirteen day listings, all above 1,000 EUR, quote one price for the whole booking, with caps of 5, 8, 9, 14 or 15 travelers. That is the first thing to know about this page: a headline number says little until you know its unit. For four of you, the median group price works out at 250 to 500 EUR each, against 120 to 250 EUR on the small-group minibus and on the classic waterfall tours.
Everything here comes from 20 listings read on 22 October 2026. Check the operator's page for what a booking contains. The geology and visiting rules of the coast are on the South Coast page, and the glacier page covers the hikes and ice caves that several of the dearest private listings copy. If the booking cap or the unit confuses you, the section on price per person comes first below.

What a private South Coast tour costs, and per what
Start with the unit, because the page's two ends do not agree on it. Viator files five of the 20 listings as a price per person: Mercury Grail, BTH Travel, Nordix Tours, Top Iceland Tours and BR Tours, all between roughly 250 and 1,000 EUR. The other 15 quote one price for the whole booking, with caps from 5 to 15 travelers, and that includes every day listing above 1,000 EUR. The Mercury Grail listing mentions a child rate and a minimum of two adults, which fits a per-person fare. Read the checkout total, not the headline.
Run the arithmetic on each unit. The five per-person listings cost about three to five times a bus or minibus day, with the car to yourself. The group prices need company: the cheapest, just above 1,000 EUR, comes to a head for seven that is level with the minibus, and the median of the 13 group-priced days comes to 250 to 500 EUR a head for four.
At the median group price, four people pay 250 to 500 EUR each. The bus costs 120 to 250 EUR, and nobody asked it to wait.
What the car changes: the clock
Time is the one thing a private vehicle sells that a bus cannot. The Icelandic Roamers listing sets out the day plainly: about two and a half hours from Reykjavik to the first waterfall, then a 30-minute drive to Skógafoss, then the same two and a half hours back. The first stop is Seljalandsfoss, where several of the bus itineraries finish their day.
The Top Iceland Tours listing, in the 500 to 1,000 EUR band, adds Gljúfrabúi, a gorge fall about 40 m high and 560 m from Seljalandsfoss by its text. The same listing says a glacier hike is not part of the day, but can be arranged on request. North Escape lists flexible stops for snacks, lunch and dinner, which is the real meaning of the word private.
Six private days, six prices
| Operator | Price band | Length | Booking cap | What the listing adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury Grail | 250 to 500 EUR | 10 h | Up to 8, minimum 2 adults | Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Dyrhólaey, Reynisfjara; a child rate is mentioned |
| Top Iceland Tours | 500 to 1,000 EUR | 10 h | Up to 5 | Gljúfrabúi and the walk to the glacier foot; hike on request |
| BR Tours | 500 to 1,000 EUR | 8 h | Up to 14 | An SUV, or a Sprinter van for 6 to 14; German or English guide |
| North Escape | more than 1,000 EUR | 12 h | Up to 15 | Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach; fuel, parking and tolls included |
| Icelandic Roamers | more than 1,000 EUR | 10 h | Up to 15 | A Land Rover Defender and a photo package |
| Hidden Iceland | more than 1,000 EUR | 11 h | Up to 15 | Lava Show entry and a valley walk to the glacier, no hike |
Compare the Top Iceland Tours and Icelandic Roamers rows. Both are ten hours and both go to the main waterfalls, Dyrhólaey and Reynisfjara, but they are not the same unit: the first is per person on a booking capped at 5, and the second is for a booking of up to 15. A couple pays twice the per-person fare on the first and one fixed price on the second; five people pay five times the fare on the first and still that one price on the second, which adds a Land Rover Defender and a photo package. Divide first, then compare.
Hidden Iceland sells the dearest day, above 1,000 EUR, and holds 43% of all the reviews on the page, 453 of 1,057, at 5.0. Its listing says the day was once also offered as a small group and is now private only. It includes the Lava Show in Vík and a guided valley walk to view the Sólheimajökull glacier, and its inclusions list rented waterproofs and boots if you pre-book them.
Where the 18 day listings sit
The chart has no slope, and two units share its axis: the five per-person listings sit at the bottom, roughly 250 to 1,000 EUR. A longer day does not climb the price, and a short one does not stay cheap. Eight-hour days run from roughly 500 to more than 1,000 EUR, ten-hour days from roughly 250 to more than 1,000 EUR, and the only 14-hour day is above 1,000 EUR. The dearest marks are the 11 and 12-hour days with a Lava Show or a Katla ice cave, all above 1,000 EUR.
Three kinds of add-on explain most of the upper half. A Katla ice cave day costs more than 1,000 EUR with Glaciers and Waterfalls and with Arctic Exped, which also sells a glacier hike with photos in the same band. A glacier lagoon day is above 1,000 EUR for 12 to 14 hours. One 8-hour listing with the lagoon in its title costs about the same, and eight hours seems too short to reach it, so read that itinerary before you pay.
Skógafoss, and lunch
The Top Iceland Tours listing walks you to the foot of Skógafoss and up the stairs to the observation deck, then recommends lunch at the Bistro Bar nearby. That is the pattern across the page: a private day gives you the route and the stops, and lunch is yours.
None of the listings we opened includes it. North Escape's includes fuel, parking, road tolls and passenger insurance, which is what separates a quote from a fare. A Hidden Iceland winter note adds that the Vík stop is shortened in the darkest months, November to January, with lunch taken on the go to save daylight.
A thin market, and two outliers
Eighteen operators sell these 20 listings, and the data are thinner than the 4.98 suggests. Only Hidden Iceland, with 453 reviews, and Top Iceland Tours, with 90, have more than 60. Twelve of the 20 listings have fewer than 30 reviews. The page's rating is mostly one operator's perfect scores, so treat a listing with six reviews as a promise and not as a record.
Do not compare headline prices across listings with different booking caps: a day in the 500 to 1,000 EUR band for up to five is priced per person, while a day above 1,000 EUR for up to fifteen is priced for the whole booking. Leave out the two outliers, as we did. A 3-day private trip above 1,000 EUR is a different product, and a listing at several times the dearest of the others for 8 hours and up to nine passengers names a driver/guide and nothing else that would explain the price, so we treat it as a data error. Private does not mean two staff either: the listings say "Driver/guide", so one person drives and guides. And the stars separate nothing, since every listing with 17 or more reviews rates 4.8 or higher. The itinerary and the unit have to do that work.
Questions about private South Coast tours
How much does a private South Coast tour from Reykjavik cost?
Private day listings run from roughly 250 to more than 1,000 EUR, typically above 1,000 EUR across 18 listings. Ten-hour days run from roughly 250 to more than 1,000 EUR, and the days that add a glacier walk, a Katla ice cave or a Lava Show cost more. A 3-day private trip costs more than 1,000 EUR.
Is the price per person or for the whole booking?
Both exist. Viator files five of the 20 listings, at roughly 250 to 1,000 EUR, as a price per person, and 15, above 1,000 EUR, as one price for the whole booking with caps of 5 to 15 travelers. The cheapest listing mentions a child rate and a two-adult minimum, which fits per person. Check the checkout total for your group size before you compare.
Is a private tour worth it compared with a small-group tour?
For two people, rarely on price: a group price at the median is roughly 500 to 1,000 EUR each against 120 to 250 EUR on a minibus, and the per-person listings start at 250 to 500 EUR. A group price undercuts the minibus only for about seven travelers or more. What you buy is the schedule and the stops, not a bargain.
Can a private tour reach the Jökulsárlón lagoon in a day?
Yes, on the listings that state 12 and 14 hours, above 1,000 EUR. One listing with the lagoon in its title is only 8 hours, which looks too short. Ask the operator for the schedule and the time you will have at the lagoon.
Do private tours include lunch or entry fees?
None of the listings we opened includes lunch. Hidden Iceland includes the Lava Show entry, and North Escape includes fuel, parking, road tolls and passenger insurance. Entry to the waterfalls is free, so what you pay for is the vehicle and the guide.
Want to share the cost?
Small-group minibus days start under 120 EUR and include pickup from Reykjavik.
