Private 8-Hour South Coast Tour: Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss and Reynisfjara (3/3)

Three stops define this eight-hour private drive along Iceland's south coast: Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Reynisfjara. Seljalandsfoss comes first, the waterfall with a short path behind the falls, so a raincoat is worth packing. The ground trembles from the weight of the water. At Skógafoss the river Skógá drops down a 60-meter cliff inside a small gorge, and a staircase beside it climbs to the shelf above the fall. Reynisfjara closes the route. Here the Atlantic's heavy waves meet basalt columns in the cliffs above a black sand beach, with rock pillars standing in the water and the cliffs of Dýrhólaey in the distance. From June to August puffins and dozens of other bird species nest on those cliffs. Private transportation is included and guiding is in English. The eight hours include travel time. Food and drinks are not included. The tour suits all fitness levels, but it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health, or for pregnant travelers. A booking can have up to 15 travelers.

  1. Seljalandsfoss waterfall

A raincoat is enough to make the short walk behind the falls. Behind the curtain of water the ground shakes with the force of the fall, and the view from there is the one most people photograph.

  2. Skogafoss

The river Skógá drops 60 meters down a cliff in a small gorge, then runs on toward the Atlantic. A staircase along the gorge climbs to the shelf above the fall. Counting the steps on the way up is a small game of its own.

  3. Reynisfjara Beach

At Reynisfjara the Atlantic's large waves break below basalt columns set into the cliffs above the black sand. Rock pillars stand in the water, and the cliffs of Dýrhólaey show in the distance. From June to August puffins and dozens of other species nest on top of the cliffs.
