Nine stops stretch this private, guided south coast tour east as far as Jökulsárlón, with none of the stress of a larger group tour. Jökulsárlón sits in Vatnajökull National Park and is filled with meltwater from the Vatnajökull glacier, the largest and most voluminous ice cap in Iceland. As the glacier retreats the lagoon keeps changing, and ice that breaks off drifts through it toward the ocean. Nearby is Diamond Beach, a strip of black sand on the Breiðamerkursandur glacial plain, where icebergs from the lagoon wash ashore against the dark sand. Closer to Reykjavik the route reaches Reynisfjara, a black sand beach known for dark sand, fascinating cliffs and rocks, and dangerous waves. Dyrhólaey, once an island of volcanic origin and formerly known to sailors as Cape Portland, is a small promontory not far from Vík. In Vík the group stops by the old church for a view from above the town, taking in the black sand beach and the Reynisdrangar cliffs. Skógafoss has a drop of more than 60 meters and a width of 25 meters, and visitors can walk right up to it. Seljalandsfoss is 65 meters tall, with a path behind the falling water, and a raincoat is needed for the drizzle. Hotel pickup and drop-off, bottled water, a driver-guide and local taxes are included. Food and drinks are not. The day is about 14 hours, and the exact length depends on the time of day and traffic. Guiding is in English.

  1. Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón lies in Vatnajökull National Park and is filled with meltwater from the Vatnajökull glacier. As the glacier retreats, the lagoon keeps changing. Ice that breaks off the glacier drifts through the lagoon toward the ocean.

  2. Vikurfjara Black Sand Beach

Reynisfjara is a black sand beach with dark sand, a fine view, dangerous waves and striking cliffs and rocks.

  3. Skogafoss

Skógafoss is among the biggest waterfalls in Iceland, with a drop of more than 60 meters and a width of 25 meters. Visitors can walk right up to it and should expect to get drenched.

  4. Seljalandsfoss waterfall

Seljalandsfoss is one of the best-known waterfalls in Iceland, 65 meters tall. A path leads behind the water, and a raincoat is needed because of the drizzle. On a sunny day a rainbow can often be seen from behind the fall.

  5. Vatnajokull Glacier

Vatnajökull, the Water Glacier in English, is the largest and most voluminous ice cap in Iceland.

  6. Dyrholaey

Dyrhólaey is a small promontory on the south coast, not far from the village of Vík, once known to sailors as Cape Portland. It was an island of volcanic origin, which the Icelandic word eyja, meaning island, recalls.

  7. Fellsfjara

Diamond Beach is a strip of black sand on the Breiðamerkursandur glacial plain, next to the Jökulsárlón lagoon. Icebergs from the lagoon wash up here and stand out sharply against the black sand.

  8. Reynisfjara Beach

Reynisfjara, the black sand beach, is known for its dark sand, its view, its dangerous waves and the cliffs and rocks around it.

  9. Vik

The stop is by the old church of Vík, which gives a view from above the town over the black sand beach and the Reynisdrangar cliffs.
