The Katla ice cave is the reason to book this private tour, which drives from Reykjavik down the south coast and spends as much time as possible on the glacier. Katla is a tongue of ice flowing from Mýrdalsjökull, Iceland's fourth largest glacier. At its base are caves cut by water pouring off the glacier in the warmer months, with blue ice, rugged ground and towering walls of ice around them. The guides have worked in the area for many years, are trained in glacial exploration and are first aid certified. Seljalandsfoss is the first waterfall on the route. It is not among Iceland's biggest, but for most of the year a path leads behind the falling water. Vík, the southernmost village on the south coast, sits on the ring road and is known for black sand beaches and odd rock formations. Skógafoss is 65 meters tall and 25 meters wide, one of the largest waterfalls in the country, and legend says a chest of gold is hidden behind it. The scenery changes at almost every turn along the way. Helmets, crampons, a harness, the ice cave entrance, parking fees and WiFi on board are included in the tour price. Dinner is not. Travelers need at least a moderate level of fitness, and the tour is not recommended with poor cardiovascular health. A booking takes up to 5 travelers, with guiding in English.

  1. Seljalandsfoss waterfall

A classic Icelandic waterfall with a twist. Seljalandsfoss is far from the country's biggest, but for most of the year a path leads behind the falling water, which makes the stop unusual.

  2. Katla Ice Cave Kerlingardalsvegur

Katla is a tongue of ice that flows from Mýrdalsjökull, Iceland's fourth largest glacier. Caves at its base are carved by meltwater that runs off the glacier in the warmer months. Blue ice, rough ground and tall ice walls make a setting that looks like a film location.

  3. Vik

Vík is the southernmost village on Iceland's south coast, on the ring road. Black sand beaches, striking scenery and strange rock formations are what it is known for.

  4. Skogafoss

Skógafoss is a classic Icelandic waterfall, 65 meters tall and 25 meters wide, which makes it one of the biggest in the country. Legend places a chest of gold behind the fall, and reaching it would take a viking's strength.
