This private full-day tour runs the whole length of the south coast, from hotel pickup in Reykjavik to the icebergs at Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach. The road passes Hveragerði, a geothermal town 45 kilometers east of Reykjavik known as the flower village for its greenhouses, and Selfoss, within an hour of the Golden Circle sights and the south coast waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss, about 60 meters tall, can be walked behind. Skógafoss drops some 60 meters over a width of 25, and visitors who walk up to it should expect to get drenched. Reynisfjara, beside Vík í Mýrdal, is a black sand beach where basalt columns stand above heavy Atlantic waves. Vík, 186 kilometers from the capital, is the southernmost village on the Icelandic mainland. The route then continues east to Jökulsárlón, the most famous glacier lagoon in Iceland, on Route 1 about halfway between the Skaftafell Nature Reserve and the town of Höfn. The day ends at Diamond Beach, where icebergs from the lagoon wash onto black sand. How much ice lies on the beach changes constantly, so some days there is plenty and some days only a little. A private vehicle and a dedicated guide leave room for extra photo stops and questions, which suits couples, families and groups of friends. Fuel, parking, road tolls, passenger insurance and Wi-Fi are included, lunch is not. Guiding is in English or Russian, and a booking takes up to 15 travelers. The 12 hours include travel time.

  1. Hveragerdi

Hveragerði lies 45 kilometers (28 miles) east of Reykjavik, on a large geothermal area. It is the gateway town to South Iceland and is called the flower village because of its many greenhouses.

  2. Selfoss

Selfoss has grown much faster than the national average in recent years. All the major nature sights of the south are within an hour's drive, including the Golden Circle and the south coast waterfalls and black sand beaches.

  3. Seljalandsfoss waterfall

Seljalandsfoss is one of the best-known waterfalls in Iceland, about 60 meters tall.

  4. Skogafoss

Skógafoss is among the biggest waterfalls in Iceland, with a drop of around 60 meters and a width of 25 meters. Visitors can walk right up to it and should expect to get soaked. Standing beside it is overwhelming.

  5. Reynisfjara Beach

Reynisfjara is a world-famous black sand beach on the south coast, right beside Vík í Mýrdal, the southernmost village on the Icelandic mainland.

  6. Vik

Vík í Mýrdal, or simply Vík, is the southernmost village on the Icelandic mainland, 110 miles (186 kilometers) from Reykjavik and next to the Reynisfjara black sand beach.

  7. Diamond Beach

Icebergs drift from a glacier lagoon down to a black sand beach, which exists nowhere else in this form. The amount of ice on the beach keeps changing with the number of icebergs in the lagoon and the number carried down by the river. Some days the beach is full of ice and some days it holds only a few pieces.

  8. Jokulsarlon

Jökulsárlón is Iceland's most famous glacier lagoon, in Southeast Iceland on Route 1, about halfway between the Skaftafell Nature Reserve and the town of Höfn. Travelers on the south coast or the Ring Road often stop here.
