A dedicated private vehicle and an English-speaking local guide who also drives set the pace of this full day in Ubud, with air conditioning and room to change plans. Tegalalang Rice Terraces come first on the list: a walk through the subak irrigation system, which UNESCO recognises, past green paddies carved into the valley, with plenty of photo stops. Tirta Empul follows, one of Bali's most important holy water temples, where the guide explains the melukat purification ritual and the story of the legendary spring. Guests are welcome to take part, and appropriate attire is required and provided. Two waterfalls complete the day. Tibumana is reached by a trek through lush jungle, and has a symmetrical cascade and a calm pool for swimming if conditions allow. Kanto Lampo is a terraced cascade over a dramatic rock face, and its shape sets it apart from other waterfalls in Bali.
