Tumpak Sewu Day Trips from Malang and Surabaya: What Roughly 30 to 250 EUR Buys
13 listings, typically 30 to 60 EUR for 10 hours. Eleven are only the waterfall, two add a Bromo sunrise and last 17 to 20 hours.
The cheapest of the 13 Tumpak Sewu day trips costs under 60 EUR and the typical price is 30 to 60 EUR. Eleven of them are what the title says: 7 to 12 hours from Malang, a car or a van, a guide, the tickets and a walk down to the foot of the falls, for roughly 30 to 250 EUR. The other two add a Bromo sunrise and turn into 17 and 20 hour marathons in the 120 to 250 EUR band. This page reads those 13 listings: what the price includes, why length hardly moves it, how the day runs hour by hour and whether you need a tour at all for a Tumpak Sewu tour from Malang or Surabaya. A day trip is a simple purchase with two traps, the unit of the price and the city the car leaves from, and both are covered here. The falls themselves, Semeru and the volcano rules are on the East Java page.
Looking at Bromo and Ijen as well? The multi-day page prices the whole loop from the 120 to 250 EUR band, and the East Java page explains why one waterfall can sit in either purchase. If the waterfall is all you want, read on: the sections below follow the day from the pickup to the climb back up, then take the money apart, compare the day with doing it yourself and say how to choose among operators when the review counts are this uneven.

A Tumpak Sewu day, hour by hour
The best-reviewed listing in the group, a private tour from Malang in the 30 to 60 EUR band, is a good template because it gives clock times. Other listings compress it: the 7-hour ones leave two to three hours at the falls once the drive is counted.
| Time | Stage | What the listing says |
|---|---|---|
| 07:00 to 07:30 | Pickup in Malang | Anywhere in the city |
| 07:30 to 10:00 | Drive to Tumpak Sewu | 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic, one 5 to 10 minute stop for a view of Semeru |
| 10:00 to 12:00 | Viewpoint, then the walk down | About 10 minutes to the panorama point, then about 50 minutes downhill to the base |
| 12:00 to 14:00 | Tetes waterfall and Goa Tetes | On foot, with stops of 10 to 15 minutes |
| 14:00 to 15:00 | Back up to the parking lot | Uphill |
| 15:00 to 17:30 | Drive back to Malang | Arrival around 17:30 |
The part that is not in the price
The walk down is what separates this tour from a viewpoint stop. Listings call the fitness requirement moderate, and the shorter ones ask for hiking shoes or mountain sandals, a change of clothes and a towel, because the path crosses small rivers and the spray reaches the base. The photo shows what the route ends at: a rock ledge, the wall of falls and almost no flat ground.
Going down is the easy half. The climb back takes an hour on that itinerary, at the end of a day that started at 7.
What roughly 30 to 250 EUR buys
Start with the chart, because the shape is odd. It plots 11 of the 13 listings by length and price, and the two long Bromo days fall outside it. Length explains almost nothing. The 7-hour listings both sit in the 30 to 60 EUR band, the 12-hour ones run from that band to the 120 to 250 EUR band.
Length does not set the price
Three listings are shared, two in the 30 to 60 EUR band and one in the 60 to 120 EUR band. The last one, a 12-hour day with four reviews, costs more than most private tours, so a shared label tells you nothing about the price. The only listing that includes lunch is a shared trip in the 30 to 60 EUR band, 7 hours, six reviews.
What the dots cannot show is the unit. Private tours here are priced per person, like shared seats, and only the Goa Tetes day via Malang, in the 60 to 120 EUR band, quotes one price for the whole group. The cheap private listings still deserve a look at the group size, since a car carries up to 6.
What the listings include, and what they skip
Three of the listings we opened in full show the range. Entrance, parking, fuel, a car and a driver are in every one. Lunch is in none of them. The differences sit in the group size, the pickup city and one clause about the cave.
| Listing | Price band and length | Group | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultimate tour with Goa Tetes (Smartway Indonesia Tours) | 30 to 60 EUR, 10.5 hours | Private, up to 6 | Entrance to viewpoint and base included, cave entrance 'conditional'; bread and water; guide in English, Malay or Javanese |
| Waterfall tour from Malang, Surabaya, Banyuwangi (Good Feeling Adventure) | 30 to 60 EUR, 9 hours | Up to 30 travelers | Pickup from Surabaya is listed as not included, despite the title; bring hiking shoes and a change of clothes |
| Private tour, Bromo sunrise then Tumpak Sewu (April Tour Guide) | 120 to 250 EUR, 17 hours | Private, up to 6 | Late-night start from Malang, then Bromo, then Tumpak Sewu and Goa Tetes; lunch not included |
The second row is a lesson in reading titles. A listing that says Surabaya in its name can still leave the Surabaya pickup out of the price, and the price is for the shared tour that leaves from Malang. Ask the operator in writing which city the pickup covers, because one multi-day listing charges IDR 600,000 per group, each way, for the extra car from Surabaya.
Do it yourself or book a tour
Tumpak Sewu is a fall you can do without a tour, and the sums are close enough to be worth doing. Public transport exists, a driver from Malang costs about IDR 300,000 on a guide from 2025, and tickets to the falls are paid at the site. Add them up and the do-it-yourself day is cheaper on paper, under 30 EUR at the exchange rate of 22 October 2026. What you do not get is the guide or a refund policy.
| On your own | A listing in the 30 to 60 EUR band | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting there | Public bus, about 2.5 hours and about 70 km from Malang, or a driver at about IDR 300,000 | Car, driver and fuel included, 2 to 2.5 hours each way |
| Tickets | IDR 50,000 viewpoint, IDR 50,000 gorge, IDR 20,000 Goa Tetes on one 2025 guide; 100,000 and 10,000 on others | Viewpoint and base included, cave 'conditional' |
| Guide | Your own arrangement | Included, English, Malay and Javanese |
| If it rains or the volcano acts | Your decision | No refund for rain or volcanic activity while the sites are declared safe; new date or refund if the authorities close them |
| Cash | For every ticket | For lunch and tips |
No official ticket tariff turned up in our reading, so the tickets in the table come from travel guides and not from the site. Prices differ by guide and by year, from 10,000 to 120,000 IDR in total. Expect to pay in cash and expect the number to depend on which segment you walk.
For about twice the money you buy the guide, the driver and the clause that says what happens if the volcano acts.
Goa Tetes, the rain and the refund clause
The Smartway listing sells the cave as part of the day: the walk goes past Tetes waterfall to Goa Tetes. Its inclusions say that entrance to the cave is conditional, which means it depends on the day. Guides describe flash-flood risk on the river in the wet season, and with heavy rain the descent and the cave can be closed.
The terms spell out who pays. There is no compensation for weather or volcanic activity as long as the sites are declared safe, and a new date or a full refund if the authorities announce a closure. Dry months, roughly May to October, are the safe window. The East Java page covers the Semeru record and the alert levels.
Choosing among 13 listings
Ratings do not separate these tours: they run from 4.8 to 5.0. Three other things do. Group size: up to 6 on the private listings we read, up to 30 on the cheapest one. Pickup city: check it, as above. And review count. Four operators hold 71% of the 429 reviews, and seven of the 13 listings have 7 or fewer, so a 5.0 from four people is not the same evidence as 4.8 from 104.
Smartway Indonesia Tours is the largest by reviews at 24%. Small operators are not worse, but with them you rely on the description, so read the inclusions twice.
Bromo and Tumpak Sewu in one day
Two listings in this group add a Bromo sunrise to the same day: a private tour of 17 hours and an all-inclusive of 20, both in the 120 to 250 EUR band. They start late at night in Malang or Surabaya, watch the sunrise, climb to the crater and drive on to the falls by midday. The waterfall gets what is left of you.
A two-day tour is the saner version: the multi-day page lists five from the 120 to 250 EUR band.
Mistakes people make
They book a 7-hour listing and are surprised that the falls get two to three hours. They expect to swim under the main fall. They wear flip-flops for a walk that crosses streams. They carry no cash for lunch, which only one listing includes. And they pick the 17 or 20 hour Bromo combination for the waterfall, when the waterfall is what the day has least time for.
Questions about Tumpak Sewu day trips
How long is the drive to Tumpak Sewu from Malang?
The Smartway listing gives 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic, and a travel guide says about 70 km and 2.5 hours by bus. Surabaya is farther and the listings give no time for it. One title promises Surabaya pickup while its inclusions list that pickup as not included, so ask before you pay.
Is there an entrance fee on top of the tour price?
Not on the listings we read. Entrance to the viewpoint and the bottom area is included, and entrance to the cave is marked conditional. If you go alone, guides quote 10,000 to 120,000 IDR in total depending on the year and the segments, paid in cash.
How hard is the walk down?
The best-reviewed listing gives about 10 minutes to a viewpoint and 50 minutes downhill to the base, then the same way up. Listings ask for moderate fitness and advise against it with heart or back problems or in pregnancy. Bring shoes with grip and a change of clothes.
Can I go in the rainy season?
Trips run, but guides warn of flash floods and the descent can be cancelled. The dry months, May to October, are the safe window. Book a listing with free cancellation and read the clause about rain and volcanic activity.
Which operator should I pick?
Ratings run from 4.8 to 5.0, so choose on inclusions, group size and pickup city. Four operators hold 71% of the reviews and seven listings have 7 or fewer, which is a reason to read the description closely rather than to avoid the small ones.
Want Bromo and Ijen on the same trip?
The multi-day page reads 20 loops, roughly 120 to 500 EUR, and says what moves the price from one to the next.
